Teaching Gifted-Enriched English Language Arts at a Title I middle school can be challenging in more ways that you can imagine. These advanced learners do not consistently benefit from the standard curriculum and materials provided by our district. Differentiating for middle school students who are performing at the 9th, 10th, and even 11th grade level ensures that they are being encouraged and motivated. I often find myself reaching out to high schools for literature that challenges these exceptional kids. Asking parents to cover the costs of additional materials from families who are already making huge sacrifices for their advanced learners is something I cannot do in good conscience.

Teachers-Pay-Teachers is a website created by and for teachers in my predicament. The website allows teachers who create innovative educational materials to sell them for a small fee so that other teachers, like me, can utilize them in their classrooms.

TPT Class Fund helps me provide them with access to materials that meet their learning needs in a way that our school district cannot. Even the smallest donation not only supports my students, but supports these innovative teachers who create units, lessons, and other materials for teachers on TPT. Your tax-exempt donation will go directly to purchase the materials on my wish list, which will in turn directly benefit the learners in my class.

Donors Choose Fundraiser: New Class Sets of The Outsiders and The Giver

My students are curious, dynamic middle schoolers who thrive when given access to stories that challenge them and reflect real-world choices. They come to class eager to participate, discuss big ideas, and grow as readers. However, engaging teenagers with reading requires physical books that are accessible, intact, and ready to use every day.

My Project

This project will fund full class sets of Lois Lowry’s The Giver and S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. Currently, our school district no longer purchases class sets of print novels. Our existing copies are severely worn, falling apart, and constantly shared across multiple grade-level teachers, making it difficult to align unit plans or allow students to take books home for independent reading.

Your support directly places classic, high-interest literature into the hands of middle school students. By replacing our tattered, missing copies with new class sets, you are ensuring that hundreds of current and future students can dive into these unforgettable stories without missing pages or waiting their turn to borrow a copy. Mrs. Kowal's Classroom Supply Wish List

If there is one thing that teachers love and use every day it is classroom supplies. I use a wide variety of instructional strategies that take into consideration student learning styles and that are designed to actively engage students in their learning. I have compiled a list of commonly used classroom supplies, and broken them up into categories from "Most Needed" to "Splurges & Gadgets." Much Needed

These are supplies that are used regularly during instruction and of which we are low in supply.

PENCILS!
Sticky Notes (All sizes, but mostly the 3x3 inch variety)
Highlighters
Crayola Markers
Dry Erase Markers
Pens
Stickers and other rewards for students (i.e. bookmarks, fun erasers, etc.)
Antibacterial wipes
Wet Ones (hand wipes)
Tissues
Paper Towels
Glue/Glue Sticks
Adhesive squares or double-stick tape.

Sort of needed

These are supplies that are used regularly, but only need to be restocked once or twice during the school year.

College-ruled notebook paper
Composition notebooks
Blank hardcover books (I have used these for years. They are great for student-created "visual journals." See my page on "Student Work" for examples.)
Tempera Paint or Water Colors
Paint Brushes
Tongue depressors
Any art supplies

Splurges & Gadgets

These are supplies or tools that would be wonderful additions to our classroom and are one-time purchases. I will definitely accept "gently used" donations.

Plants! (i.e. ferns, ficus tree, succulents)
Bean bag chair (for our reading area)
Gently used books (Young Adult literature, nonfiction or literary classics)
Throw pillows (for our reading area)
String lights (colorful holiday lights)
Fun stamps and stamp pads
Small plastic sand timers (one minute or five minute)
