Gifted Language Arts and Literature

Grades 6, 7, and 8: This is a class for students who demonstrate advanced abilities in reading and/or writing through the initial gifted testing or advanced scores on state and/or district standardized testing. Gifted Language Arts and Literature is an advanced class designed to meet the unique cognitive and affective needs of gifted students with high abilities in reading and writing. This integrated three-year program utilizes multi-disciplinary projects, advanced reading materials and accelerated vocabulary to develop skills in critical thinking, reading, research, speaking, listening and writing. 

Gifted Seminar

This interdisciplinary elective is designed to develop the creativity, critical thinking and communication skills of gifted students through project-based learning, problem solving and collaboration with intellectual peers. All gifted students are eligible for this gifted elective; however, priority will be given to those gifted students who do not qualify in an academic area. 

Gifted Qualification Requirements 

Each student is evaluated for eligibility based on intellectual ability, achievement (math, reading and writing),creativity and critical thinking. As a prerequisite for all gifted courses, students must qualify with an IQ in the gifted range (130 or above).

Eligibility for gifted core classes requires a score in the gifted range in the core subject area. Example: Students who qualify for gifted based on Math and IQ scores will not be placed in a gifted ELA class unless they also score in the gifted or advanced range on state or district assessments.

The Individualized Education Program (IEP) is required by state law to assure that each gifted student as appropriate education services to meet their unique instructional needs.
