AP Art and Design Course Description and Overview
AP Studio Art is an elective course that is organized around the structure of the AP Studio Art Portfolios. This is a year-long course emphasizing the creation of artwork suitable for submission to the College Board. Students work on one of the three AP Studio Art portfolios focusing on both the Selected Works and Sustained Investigation sections of the portfolio. This class is taught as preparation for the rigor of college level courses, a valuable opportunity for highly motivated students who are interested in the experience of art at that level. This means you must be willing to make a significant and sustained commitment to make high quality artwork, which takes time, energy, and the production of a lot of artwork. Student success is directly related to the consistent commitment that you, the student, makes to the requirements of the class.
This is a rigorous course that requires many hours of work in and out of the studio to complete 20 college-level works of art. This is not an easy class, but, with proper organization and focus, and by following the strict deadlines for turning in your work, you will be able to succeed and make an exceptional art portfolio. You will submit your portfolio next May.
Portfolios are scored from 1-5 by AP readers (5 is the highest score), and you could qualify for college credit with a score of 3-5. At this point, the cost of the AP test is currently $94. Students will need to sign up and pay for the test in late September ( I will keep you updated).
You will have many project and process options to consider and as advanced students you will have a lot of freedom to develop individual approaches to these projects. That said, expectations for AP are exceedingly high, meaning your work will be done on time and at your highest skill level with maximum effort.
