This video takes you on a tour of our course. After watching the video you should have an understanding of the course organization, assignment types, and expectations. You'll also learn about some of the technical aspects of taking a corse through AsULearn, Appalachian's online course management software. Please contact me with questions. The video reviews several ways to do that!
Hello and welcome to our class! I've been teaching at Appalachian for 17 years now. I love helping students grow as learners. Please visit me often via Zoom. This video introduction lets you know a bit more about me. You'll be submitting a survey to let me know a bit more about you and sharing some of your responses in small groups on the first day of class to get to know each other.
We will adhere to the University-wide syllabus and policy statements: https://academicaffairs.appstate.edu/resources/syllabi-policy-and-statement-information. Below I have summarized a few important topics that have not been addressed in other syllabus sections.
You should explore the course material and write out your thinking in a way that can be shared with others. Academic integrity is a fundamental part of the course, which includes meeting deadlines, regular communication, and giving proper reference where it is due. These are essential to course integrity. Be sure to give acknowledgment where it is due. Submitting someone else’s work as your own (PLAGIARISM) is a serious violation of the University’s Academic Integrity Code, which defines: “Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, borrowing, downloading, cutting and pasting, and paraphrasing without acknowledgement, including from online sources, or allowing an individual’s academic work to be submitted as another’s work.”
Appalachian State University is committed to providing an inclusive experience, accessible learning environments and equal opportunity to individuals with disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Individuals needing reasonable accommodations should contact the Office of Disability Resources (828.262.3056 or odr.appstate.edu).
Appalachian State University Policy 302.8 requires that all students wear face coverings at all times that social distancing is not feasible. Even if social distancing is feasible face coverings shall be worn at all times in classrooms, conference rooms, meeting rooms, elevators, research laboratory spaces, and any other instructional areas, unless an approved modification has been provided pursuant to the policy. Appropriate face coverings include cloth face coverings and other reusable University-approved face coverings that cover the nose and mouth of the individual. Failure to comply with this policy may result in dismissal from the current class session and charges under the Code of Student Conduct.
Sarah Greenwald and I thank Appalachian's Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) for their help as we created our course with the support of an online course development grant.
