This document outlines the key grading policies for online labs (lab sections designated as WEB-based instruction). Although these policies are derived from your course syllabus, please refer to the syllabus if any discrepancies arise. If you have questions, contact physicslabs@appstate.edu.
Grade Policies
The lab is a separate course from the lecture. You will get a separate letter grade for each.
You CAN withdraw from one without affecting the other.
If you fail the lecture, but pass the lab, you do NOT need to retake the lab. Similarly if you fail the lab, but pass the lecture, you can retake the lab without the lecture.
Note: This policy started in Fall 2024, if you took physics prior to Fall 2024, you cannot use a previous lab grade.
NO Partners: This lab will be conducted on-line and each student will submit an individual lab report. You MUST SUBMIT YOUR OWN UNIQUE images, data, calculations, graphs, explanations, conclusions, etc. Copying items on Lab Assignments or re-using a lab completed in a previous semester constitutes an academic integrity code violation and will be brought before the Office of Student Conduct.
Academic integrity warning: If your lab report is found to be a duplicate of another student, or your own work re-submitted from a previous semester, or has content generated by AI, this constitutes an academic integrity code violation and will be brought before the Office of Student Conduct.
A potential numerical lab grade can be estimated by finding the average grade for Quizzes and Lab Assignments and applying the weighting shown below.
Quizzes (1 dropped) 20%
Lab Assignments (1 dropped) 80%
There will be NO extra credit or make-up assignments provided.
Letter grades for Lab
Numerical grades will be rounded to the nearest whole number. Even if you are close to the next letter grade DO NOT ASK FOR YOUR GRADE TO BE CHANGED. (Please understand that this policy is in place for the fairness of all students.)
Assignment Deadlines
All Quizzes must be completed by 11:59 PM on the due date listed.
1 Quiz grade will be dropped.
Extensions on Quizzes are only allowed with documentation from the Dean of Students or Veteran’s Affairs. You may contact the director of laboratories, Dr. Sherman (shermanlb@appstate.edu) to arrange an override for a late quiz submission.
Completed Lab Assignments should be submitted to the course site by 11:59 PM on the due date listed for full credit.
If you miss the deadline, you will need to contact your lab instructor to determine if they will accept the lab late.
A late penalty may be applied at the discretion of the instructor. Please see the course syllabus for details.
No late labs may be turned in after the last day of classes, this deadline may be earlier in the summer.
If you do not turn in a lab you will receive a zero for the lab assignment. However, the lowest lab assignment grade will be dropped to account for 1 unavoidable missed lab.
Accommodations involving medical and active military absences will be decided by the director of laboratories and the department chair. Documentation from the Dean of Students or Veteran’s Affairs is required for any accommodation.
Grading of Assignments
Viewing feedback on graded assignments: You can view comments on your lab assignment submissions after they are grading both by viewing the graded rubric. (This may not work on the mobile app, use the web browser version of Asulearn.)
Instructors will begin grading assignments as soon as they are submitted. Assignments should be graded within 2 weeks, and grades will be available on the course gradebook.
Any additional accommodations must get approval from the director of laboratories (Dr. Sherman, shermanlb@appstate.edu) or the department chair. Documentation from the Dean of Students or Veteran’s Affairs is required for any accommodation.
