Create a Class

and Adding Students

Follow these steps to create a class:

  • Open a Web browser and go to classroom.google.com. You have to sign in with your Google Apps for Education account.

  • On the Welcome screen, click the plus sign at the top and choose Create Class.

  • In the Create a Class dialogue box, type in the Class Name and Section.

  • Click Create.


  • (Optional) To enter a short description, grade level, or class time, click Section and enter the details.

  • (Optional) To add a subject, click Subject and enter a name, or click one from the list that appears when you enter text.

  • (Optional) To enter the location for the class, click Room and enter the details.

  • Click Create.

Next steps: When you create a class, Classroom automatically creates a class code. You use it to invite students to the class. You can always view the class code on the Stream page.


Invite students with the access code

To save yourself the time of inviting all your students, you can have your students take the responsibility of inviting themselves to the class with a special access code. Here’s how:

  • Log in to your class and get the class code on the bottom left (see Figure 2).

  • Give that code to your students via the most convenient method (such as writing it on your classroom board or including it on a handout).

  • Tell your students to go to classroom.google.com, click the plus sign at the top, and type in the code to join the class.


Invite students to your class

You can invite students from either the school’s directory or from your own contacts or group list. Just follow these steps:

  • Log in to your class and click the Students tab.

  • Click Invite.

  • In the Select Students to Invite dialogue box, check the boxes next to all of the students you wish to invite to the class (see Figure 1).

  • Click Invite Students.

Your class list updates to include the students you just invited. The invited students receive an e-mail asking them to join the class. Each student has to click the link in the e-mail to join the class.

The students must have an e-mail address belonging to the school’s domain, such as myname@myuniversity.edu. You can’t invite people outside your school’s domain.

If you have a large number of students to choose from, use the Search field at the top to find the students in your class.
