March 2023

Hot off the Press!

Ed School Climate Survey (EDSCLS) for ALL stakeholders is coming soon!

Measuring school climate is critical for improving school climate because high quality school climate data allows us to understand the perceptions of the students, staff, and parents in our schools and across the district; monitor progress; make data-informed decisions; involve stakeholders; and adapt to shifting needs related to school climate.

This year, the district will administer the Ed School Climate Survey (EDSCLS) provided by the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments.  The EDSCLS measures engagement (cultural and linguistic competence; relationships; school participation), safety (emotional safety; physical safety; bullying/ cyberbullying; substance abuse; emergency readiness/management), and environment (physical environment; instructional environment; physical health; mental health; discipline).

By assessing the perceptions of school climate, data from school climate assessments can be used to set goals and priorities and choose programmatic interventions. Data also can identify areas where students, staff, and parents view climate in similar or dissimilar ways.

Please look for future communication with links for the ED School Climate Survey (EDSCLS).

NOTE:  Students and Instructional Staff - surveys will be sent out through Infinite Campus on March 20!!  Parent/Guardian surveys will be posted in multiple platforms - SCSD website, Superintendent's Brief, social media platforms, etc. for access.

Non-Instructional staff surveys will be sent via email on March 20!!

The Transportation Times

As our after school and recess activities continue to blossom, transportation has increased services to support our students needs. These programs include: 21st Century, Empire, Chime, Acting Academy, Theatre Tech, Steam (during recess weeks), and Athletics. We do our best to ensure our students receive safe, efficient and timely transportation to these activities.

In addition, there is a new program that we are now working to support with transportation that will introduce our students to the food service industry.

More to come!   We are excited to provide these transportation services for our students.

In this instance, if a family requests for their child to be tested at school, the public school coordinates a space for the student to come in on the days of testing administration for the student(s) to test.

A few families have reached out already to request this - it is our duty to provide this option.

the grants gazette

Grants are picking up and we are working smart to review all new opportunities...

REMINDER - ALL schools have designated dollars within the Consolidated Application for Title Funding that is open and available.  Each building Principal has received an email from OPA about this funding availability - in supplies and might be a best source for Participatory Budget (for CSI Schools) items for 22-23.

Preparation for 23-24 Consolidated Application for Title Funding will begin in March - Principals, please look for emails to coordinate stakeholder meetings that provide information on what Title Funding is and how the district utilizes the funding.  Yay!!

Please contact Tracy Angelini at angelinit@schenectadyschools.org, if you have any questions.

Wait, ANOTHER reminder of PARTICIPATORY bUDGET PLANNING TIME...

REMINDER - Each school year, all Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) schools must implement a Participatory Budgeting process or select from an approved list of alternatives to Participatory Budgeting designed to increase student and family participation in decision making.

In order to meet the NYSED Participatory Budgeting requirements for identified schools, the district has mapped out the following guideline for compliance. (If you are able to complete your work ahead of this schedule that is fine - as some buildings have already shared their plans :)

Timeline for 2021-2022 Participatory Budgeting

1.       By January 31, 2023, all PB teams will be identified and the process has begun.

2.       By March 30, 2023, PB teams will have completed their work.  The project(s) have been selected by the students and parents via

voting and the results shared with the Assistant Director of Grants.

3.       By April 4, 2023, all requisitions for the winning projects are entered and the PO’s are in the process for approval.
