Computer Science at grade 4 or higher or BTEC Level 2 DIT at Merit or higher.
The new BTEC Extended Certificate in Information Technology is designed for students who are interested in learning about the Digital sector alongside other fields of study. The course is part practical and part academic, and suits students who enjoy technical as well as creative subjects. Students are assessed through a combination of practical and written assessments.
You will study four units: Information Technology Systems; Cyber Security and Incident Management; Website Development; Relational Database Development. The first two units are assessed through written exams; and there are practical controlled assessments for the other two.
IT systems play a part in almost everything we do. You will explore the relationships between the hardware and software that form an IT system, and the relationship between the user and the system. You will examine the impact that they have on organisations and individuals. This unit will give you a fundamental understanding of all areas of IT.
Our increasing reliance on computer systems and the data they contain makes us vulnerable to attacks from cyber criminals. There is an increasing need for IT professionals to protect networked systems and the information they contain. You will examine the many types of cyber security attacks, the vulnerabilities in networked systems and the techniques that can be used to defend an organisation’s networked systems.
Modern lifestyles are digitally driven and website developers must combine different tools and techniques to capture and maintain users' interest. You will plan, design and develop a website by applying website development principles, tools and techniques. Many software developers, database experts and systems managers need web-client development skills.
Databases underpin many processes in numerous aspects of modern society; they are the repository of information that make up the world wide web as we know it. You will examine the structure of data and how an efficient data design follows through into an effective, useful database. You will apply practical skills in designing and developing a database, using Microsoft Access.
Studying how companies communicate with their customers online. Analysing cyber security scenarios and evaluating risks. Creating databases to meet customer requirements. Designing and creating websites, and producing digital components such as graphics and animations. Giving presentations and organizing meetings. Completing practical tasks and working in teams.
On completion of this course you might decide to study for a degree in computing or information technology, or in a related degree. You could instead begin a training course or go straight into employment in IT. Alternatively, the skills you will develop could lead you into a career in business. If you decide to follow a different path, your IT knowledge and skills will be invaluable in almost any career.
You will have the opportunity to see how IT is used in a business setting.
