GCSE Design and Technology or GCSE Art and Design grade 6 or higher. In exceptional circumstances, students who have experience of extra-curricular creation of three dimensional design work at a high level may be considered for this course.
This subject will appeal to creative, self motivated students who have a passion for experimenting and creating work in three dimensions in a range of materials including wood, metal, card and plastics. Students are encouraged to experiment and problem solve to create decorative and functional products.
Many of the students interested in A Level Three Dimensional Design also look at a range of other subjects to complement it, for example Photography, Art and Design, Production arts, Physics and Mathematics.
You will develop your existing knowledge of design and making to create imaginative and innovative products and outcomes. You will be encouraged to experiment with new materials and techniques including computer aided design and manufacture as well as more traditional workshop techniques.
The course will enable you to explore a wide range of materials and processes to create three dimensional decorative or functional outcomes in product and spacial contexts. You will be able to develop projects in your own area of interest including, product design, sculpture, furniture, architecture, lighting and jewellery using 2D and 3D design and manufacturing techniques.
Your work as a designer will enable you to explore how materials, shape and form can evoke emotional responses in the viewer and promote discussion about the the wider meanings and environmental impact of your designs.
You will be required to develop a range of projects over two years. Alongside your final pieces you will be required to keep sketch books of your research and development work. During the first year and first term of the second year you will develop a personal portfolio which will be worth 60% of your final grade. For the remainder of year 2 you will take an externally set assignment that culminates in a 15 hr period of sustained focus under examination conditions.
Students will be required to work in at least 2 of the following areas; product design, spacial design, or design crafts. By working across disciplines, students will extend their understanding of the scope of three-dimensional design.
You will gain skills that are useful in a wide range of jobs, in further study of Product Design, Art and Design, Engineering, Spacial design, Architecture, Environmental design and Transport design and many other design careers. In your personal life develop decision making skills, including the planning and organisation of time and resources when managing a project.
We will visit museums and galleries and invite designers and guest speakers to come and visit in school. You will also be given the opportunity to go on residential trips. Your work will be displayed in exhibitions and entered into design competitions such as teen tech awards and you could be supported to apply for scholarships including Arkwright.
