Grade 6 or higher in GCSE Art Textiles or GCSE Design technology Textiles
In exceptional circumstances, students who have experience of extra-curricular creation of art textiles work at a high level may be considered for this course.
This course will provide budding designers the opportunity to build a broad range of practical skills using fabric and textiles techniques. If you are creative, love to explore and experiment with media and materials and have a keen interest in pattern, colour and working both collaboratively and Independently, this course is for you.
You will develop a range of projects with broad and open themes. You will refine your own creative process and learn a range of skills including Printing, Dyeing, Stitch and Embroidery, Pattern Cutting, 3D Fabric Sculpture, Design for Fashion.
The assessment is based on work produced for Component 1 - Personal Portfolio and Component 2 - Externally Set assignment. Component 1 counts for 60% of your final grade and Component 2 40% of your final grade. You will be assessed on your sketchbook work and your final pieces, some of which will be done under exam conditions. As part of your Personal Portfolio you will also produce a written investigation of between 2000-3000 words.
In unit 1 students take inspiration from the natural world and work towards a textiles outcome of their choice. In unit 2 they will gain an understanding of how fashion designers work and will gain technical skills in pattern creation for garments. Students will have creative freedom to choose different styles of outcomes such as installation, garment or textile artwork.
Students on this course are likely to go on to take a foundation course in Art which covers a range of Art disciplines or a degree in Fashion, Textiles or Interior Design. There are a broad range of careers in Textiles Design such as Designer Maker, Luxury Textiles Designer, Kidswear Designer, Fashion Designer, Print Designer, Interior Designer and many more.
As an Art Textiles student you will visit Art and Design Galleries and degree shows, use the art studios during your free periods, display your own work in art exhibitions and work alongside colleges and universities.
