Why do you need to study a language at KS4?

In the 21st Century, if you speak more than one language, you can enjoy more opportunities than ever before. Almost any job can involve languages, whether it is based in the UK or abroad. A language qualification will add a bonus to your career, making you more employable in the job market and you will be able to work anywhere in Europe or beyond.

If you decide to opt for a German at Key Stage 4, you must have studied it in Key Stage 3.


CONTENT

The GCSE in German will develop further your language skills. You will have the opportunity to:

  • develop your ability to understand and use the language effectively

  • develop an understanding of grammar and language patterns to help you speak and write the language accurately

  • learn about other cultures and civilisations, comparing them to your own

  • carry on studying it for A level and at University

The two year GCSE course covers three main themes, which are subdivided in topics:

  1. Identity and culture

  2. Local, national, international and global areas of interest

  3. Current and future study and employment.​​​​​​​


ASSESSMENT​​​​​​​

GCSE German is a linear course with four compulsory papers assessing the 4 skills and carrying equal weighting:

1. Listening (25%) 2. Reading (25%) 3. Speaking (25%) 4. Writing (25%)

All 4 papers are assessed and marked externally by the exam board and can be taken at Foundation or Higher tier.​​​​​​​
