Take an Assessment to help you make college/career decisions

Many students struggle with the decision-making process when choosing a college major or career pathway. Often, this is a result of not enough information or research into what options are available. A good place to start is with an Interest Assessment. The MnCareers Interest Inventory is a comprehensive assessment you could try. Another option is the IDEAS assessment through the Minnesota Career Information System (students log into MCIS via Clever). Click on Assessments, then IDEAS.

You can find more information about The Minnesota Career Information System as a research tool on the Advisory page.

Career Assessment Tools

When choosing career, it makes a lot of sense to take time to first identify your interests, skills and values, as well as your likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. Once you have a better understanding of who you are, you will be able to match this information to information about the various career options available to you.

  • The Career Key is a quiz designed to measure your abilities, interests, personality traits, skills and values.

  • The Keirsey Temperament Sorter is designed to identify various kinds of personality temperaments. The results will give you a four-letter personality indicator, as well as an explanation of what each indicator means.

  • The Occupational Information Network OnLine, developed for the US Department of Labor, allows users to explore careers, jobs and occupations.

  • The Green Light is a website where you can search colleges, find the perfect match, and learn your chances of admission.

  • The Transferable Skills Survey was developed by the University of Minnesota. It asks you to rate 62 items from 0 to 3 in several skill set categories, and then uses this information to provide a percentage ranking of your skills from these categories.

Exploring Career Options

There are various ways you can explore and identify occupations that fit your interests, personal qualities, skills and values, for example, by reading about them, taking occupational inventories, and talking with professionals in the field. You can also try out a possible career choice through a career-related part-time job, internship or cooperative education experience. The following list provides access to online career assessments available in addition to the MCIS resource used in Advisory Class.
