When is school canceled for weather conditions?

Schedule Change Decisions Made by Superintendent - Decisions to cancel or shorten the regular school day and after-school activities or to hold an e-learning (distance-learning) day shall be made by the superintendent in consultation with other staff as appropriate. Although severe weather conditions are the most common reason for a change of school schedule, other events could necessitate the delay, cancellation or early dismissal of school.

Decisions to cancel or delay school due to cold weather

• Made by 6:30 p.m. the night before.

• Communicated first on the district website and social media.

• The district sends a notification message. One per family.

• Information shared with local television stations.

Guidelines District #196 uses to make the decision, which are similar to other area school districts

• National Weather Service forecast at 6:00am calls for

  • Air temperature of -25 degrees Fahrenheit or colder

  • Wind chill of -35 degrees Fahrenheit or colder

These are dangerously cold conditions where frostbite may occur in less than 10 minutes.

Decisions to cancel or delay the start of school due to snow

• Made by 5:30 a.m. the day of.

• Based largely on road conditions and the ability of school buses to complete their routes without significant delays

• Communicated first on the district website and social media.

• The district sends a notification message. One per family.

• Information shared with local television stations.

YMCA School Age Care cancellations

• SAC is not offered on days school is canceled due to snow

• Due to cold weather

  • SAC will be offered at pre-determined locations.

  • Provided only for currently enrolled families.

If school is canceled for snow or cold weather, the following activities are also canceled:

• Connections preschool classes;

• Early Childhood Special Education classes;

• Early Childhood Family Education classes;

• Adult Basic Education classes;

• All Community Education daytime and after-school classes, and

• All elementary and middle school after-school and evening activities.

A decision about high school and Community Education evening activities is made by 3 p.m. and communicated on the front page of the district website.

Parents and guardians always have the choice to keep their child at home if they concerned about sending their child to school because of weather conditions.
