The Permit Application

Before taking the Permit Test you will need to fill out an online application within a 30 day window of taking the test, this is required and must be done in advance - hard copy applications are no longer an option at the DMV.  This information will be finalized when you go in to take the permit test.  The same process is necessary to take the Road Test when a student turns 16.  

To fill out an application go to DPS.MN.GOV, from the top left corner click on "Divisions" and then "Driver and Vehicle Services".  This will bring you to the Online Services page - scroll down to the Driver Services section and click on "Pre-Apply for a Driver's License or ID".  Here you will enter personal information, much of which will go on your Learner's Permit ID Card.  After submitting the application a confirmation number will be emailed to you and it's a good idea to write this number down to provide at the DMV if necessary.  Again, this application must be filled out within a 30 day window of taking the test.
