Behind The Wheel

How It All Works
Once students earn their permit, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel with a licensed instructor is required to move forward in getting a drivers license.  After passing the permit test it is the student’s responsibility to contact their instructor, so check the lists and make contact with your instructor.  These 6 hours of behind-the-wheel can be completed at any time prior to taking the license test (which is on or after the student’s 16th birthday).  This could be the immediate days after earning a permit, the days prior to taking the license test, or any day in between.  Schedules are tight so it is very important that students show up at scheduled times – if you must cancel you should contact the instructor at least 24 hours in advance  (Failure to show up during a scheduled time will result in an additional no-show fee of $25).  A white completion card will be given out when behind-the-wheel hours are completed, you must bring this white card when taking the road test to earn a provisional license at the local exam station.

Behind the wheel lessons range from 1 to 2 hours and take place after school, on the weekends, during school breaks, and on summer vacation.  Lessons are designed to introduce students to basic vehicle controls, common driving maneuvers, and to prepare them for anything they may encounter on the roads.  Student drivers will get more out of behind the wheel lessons if they have had some experience with their parents prior to their scheduled lesson - less time will be spent on introductory things and more can be spent learning about new driving situations.  If parents are too uneasy about riding with their son/daughter before going out with a behind-the-wheel instructor, that is OK too.  Check the lists and call your assigned instructor when you are ready to schedule your behind the wheel lessons.
