How It All Works
Once students earn their permit, they must complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel with a licensed instructor at a local driving school in order to move forward in getting a drivers license. These 6 hours of behind-the-wheel can be completed at any time prior to taking the license test (which is on or after the student’s 16th birthday). This could be the immediate days after earning a permit, the days prior to taking the license test, or any day in between. A white completion card will be given out when behind-the-wheel hours are completed, you must bring this white card when taking the road test to earn a provisional license at the local exam station.
Behind the wheel lessons are designed to introduce students to basic vehicle controls, common driving maneuvers, and to prepare them for anything they may encounter on the roads. Student drivers will get more out of behind the wheel lessons if they have had some experience with their parents prior to their scheduled lesson - less time will be spent on introductory things and more can be spent learning about new driving situations. Parents should take on the role of teaching vehicle controls and basic maneuvers; baby steps are the key. Start in a calm parking lot or a vacant street and build up to busier situations; lane position and speed control are the early focus, followed lots of turns and unique situational driving. Only move when on to complicated driving after a student has mastered the simplest of driving tasks.
