Can I just pay to take the permit test? No, it is a package deal. You cannot get your permit without financially committing to a behind the wheel program, unless you are over the age of 18.
What's the next step after completing class? As the class comes to an end you will receive a Classroom Completion Letter as a voucher. Research a local Behind-The-Wheel Driver Education Program, costs will vary. Take your Classroom Completion Letter to the school of your choice, pay their fee, receive an E-Card (Blue Card), then move on to taking the permit test.
What is an E-Card (Blue Card)? A Blue Card or E-Card is given to students as a voucher (or ticket) to take their Permit Test as a DMV. (Only E-Cards will be used after 6/30/25) Students must have completed the classroom portion of Drivers Ed and paid a local driving school to get a Blue Card or ECard. The Blue Card represents 'financial commitment to a local Drivers Ed Program' and gets the student 2 attempts at the Knowledge Test (the test cost $10 per test on the 3rd and subsequent tests) and 6 hours of behind the wheel with a Licensed Instructor.
Do I need to pay for a E-Card? Yes, IF AND ONLY IF you want to take the permit test and complete behind the wheel before age 18. Or you can wait until you are 18 when no classroom or behind the wheel driver training is required, which is very scary.
What is a White Card? A White Card is given to students from their Behind The Wheel Instructor after they have completed their 6 hours of lessons. This White Card represents completion of Behind The Wheel and students should bring this with them when they take the Road Test to earn a license.
Can I start driving before I get my permit? Not legally on public streets although it is legal on private property. It is best to wait until a student has earned their permit before driving but some introductory knowledge is useful, such as where vehicle controls are.
Is Mr. Scanlon awesome? Yes, ask your friends about it.
