Raising Money For Western Carolina

By: Molly Hann

Recently, hurricane Helene hit the mountains unexpectedly and people are now left without a home, food, jobs, transportation, and even some family members. So, to show our support, our school has been holding multiple events and fundraisers for people suffering in the mountains, including PJ Day on October 11th. For this fundraiser, we pay five dollars or more to wear PJs at school and one day, all of the money goes to the people in the mountains who need help.

The cheerleaders also take the chance to do something to help. We set up a table outside the gym every day from 10/7-10/11 school week, from 8:30 AM to 8:50 AM. We are letting people write encouraging notes to people in the mountains, whether it’s a person who has been affected by Hurricane Helene, or if it’s a first responder helping out the people in need of help. We are also letting people bring in warm clothes, like coats, blankets, pants, etc. This will take place on the 10/7-10/11 school week. You can drop off all of the things you bring into the office, there will be a trash can to put them in. You will get a temporary tiger paw tattoo if you donate.  As of Thursday, October 10th, we have had a huge success on both fundraisers. We have a trailer full of clothes, and a whole crate full of thoughtful cards for people in the mountains that have no house, no food, or lost family members. And we are taking action on this problem and helping out. Just a reminder that we are only taking clothes for cold weather, some people keep bringing in t-shirts, shorts, and swimsuits. Since it is getting colder in the mountains, we could use some more clothes. As a result, as of 10/14/24, we’ve had a huge success in the clothes drive. We ended up filling about thirty or more big bags of clothes.

Beta Club’s sponsored PJ day was a huge success too. This took place on Oct. 11th, and we raised a total of $1,600. Students paid between $5-$20. All of the donations are on their way up to the mountains now and hopefully will help the mountain people at least a little bit. These fundraisers were a huge success! Keep helping our nation as we face tough storms!
