Freshman Year tips for academic success:
- Take the most challenging classes available and do well in those classes. Everything counts in high school. All courses, grades, and credits will be on your transcript and will calculate in your GPA.
- CAPS Meetings will begin in the Spring 2021 with your teachers and counselors.
- Use a planner.
- Have a positive attitude and give each class your best effort.
- Review materials nightly that are covered in class, even if no homework has been assigned.
- Schedule work and study time. Break large assignments down into smaller parts.
- Organize your study materials, notes, handouts, etc.
- Come to class prepared by bringing all necessary materials and be well rested, alert, and ready to learn.
- Participate in class by asking pertinent questions, volunteer answers, and participate in discussions.
- Be respectful of your teachers and classmates.
- Take responsibility for your grades.
- Use the student portal to keep up with your grades and attendance.
- Attend school every day. If you are absent, be sure to get missed work.
- Adapt to your teachers.
- Improve your reading, study skills, and test-taking strategies if necessary.
- Read and take advantage of the writing opportunities you have in all classes. The more you practice, the better you will be!

Tips for college acceptance success:
- Join clubs and activities in your area of interest and/or participate in volunteer activities
- If you plan to play sports in college, talk with your coach and counselor. You will need to meet eligibility requirements and cannot wait until the senior year to do so.
- Build relationships with peers, teachers, counselors, activity sponsors, and employers.
- Make good choices and decisions.
- Set long and short term goals for yourself. Having goals gives you something to work toward.
- Explore career options and choose a career that is right for you. Consider your abilities, your interests, and your values.
- Explore college costs and how you and your parents will pay for college.
- Begin to create a list of accomplishments, activities, and work experiences during your high school career to put on your college applications.
