The Freshman Academy exists to support our 9th graders, so we are very mindful of their anxiety about the first day of high school. Parents probably share many of these same concerns! We promise to do everything we can to ease any concerns.
Our Freshman Academy Orientation is very effective in helping students and parents understand what to expect this year and puts students at ease before the first day of school. We will hold our Open House on Monday, August 4th, from 5:30-7:00 PM. We will open with an assembly in the auditorium to explain the details of the Academy and what to expect before allowing students and parents to visit classrooms and meet teachers. Only freshmen and their families are invited to visit the school during this time.
Date: The first day of school is Thursday, August 5th, and the school day begins at 8:10 am.
Arrival: You'll likely be dropped off in the Freshman Car Circle or the bus loading area. When you arrive, please make your way to the Freshman Academy. There will be plenty of teachers around who can help you find your way. We will have all 9th graders begin their day in their Academic Enhancement class. This can be found on your schedule and will be listed as your 6th period (1st semester) class. Both the teacher's name and room number are listed. If you can't access your schedule, then there will be rolls posted in several places throughout the Freshman Academy. Find your name, and your AE teacher and their room number will be listed. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask! Students may not be dropped off or enter the building before 7:30 AM.
Tour and Procedures: After you get to AE, your teacher will go over the daily schedule and tell you everything that you need to know: the bell schedule, lunch procedures, class changes, restroom policies, etc. There's going to be a lot of information, and by the end of the day, all of your questions will be answered. You'll also tour the school and locate your elective classroom locations.
Lunch: Before lunch, your teacher will go over lunchroom procedures and how to figure out what's served in the various lines. They will also go over the locations in the building where you can eat. You may bring your lunch or purchase a school lunch. Microwaves are also available for student use.
Chromebooks: You'll receive your Chromebook and charger at some point on the first day, and your AE teacher will go over how to log in and access the various apps and websites that you will be using throughout the year.
Going to Electives: When it's time to go to your elective classes, your teacher will ensure you know how to get there. Just in case, we'll have lots of help stationed throughout the school to help you find where you need to go.
What to Bring: All you need on the first day is notebook paper and something to write with. You may want to bring your book bag since you'll receive your Chromebook and other materials throughout the day.
