The curriculum and teaching standards for courses are prescribed by the S.C. Department of Education and approved by the Educational Oversight Committee. The EOC is comprised of state legislators or individuals appointed by state legislators. While teachers have flexibility in their methods of instruction, they are required to follow the state approved standards when developing what will be taught in a given course.
The following links will access the state standards for specific content areas. The standards are written to span all twelve years of school, and the standards typically overlap across multiple courses taught at the high school level. In most cases, support documents are provided that clarify the content of specific courses.
The curriculum for Academic Enhancement was developed over numerous years to provide lessons for content which falls outside of the normal academic standards. This includes lessons related to the Profile of a South Carolina Graduate, legislatively mandated topics (such as CPR and Erin's Law), exploration of careers and post-secondary education, and lifeskills.
