Communication & Updates

Email dated August 2, 2023 from the AULA Office of the Provost to the AULA Community

Dear AULA Community:

As news outlets recently report (LA Times & SF Chronicle), COVID cases in California are on the rise. As such, AULA community members are likely to be at a higher risk of being exposed to COVID.

Please note that the AULA community is advised to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance about isolation and exposure. If you believe that you have been exposed to COVID and/or if you test positive for COVID, please use the Isolation and Exposure Calculator provided by the CDC and act accordingly. In the event of the need to isolate, students enrolled in on-ground classes are advised to consult their syllabi and/or inform their instructors. Employees are advised to inform their direct supervisors and/or Human Resources.

As a reminder, the best way to protect oneself from COVID is to get vaccines and booster shots. If you have not done so recently, please consult your doctor about your vaccine status.

If you have any questions or concerns about COVID protocols on the AULA campus, please refer to the AULA Returning to Campus Google Site. You may also email or call Chief Operations Officer Sandy Lee at slee2@antioch.edu or 310-578-1080 x3447.

Thank you,

AULA Provost

Letter dated January 25, 2023 from AULA Provost Mark Hower to AULA Students, Faculty & Staff

Dear AULA Community,

I write to inform you of anticipated changes to the campus COVID protocols beginning Monday, February 6th

Before the holiday break, you may recall that mask requirements were extended into the first weeks of Winter quarter in recognition of the high rates of COVID transmission in LA and the potential for additional seasonal COVID complications.

COVID rates did go up, and they’ve begun to go down in LA and surrounding communities. Assuming conditions stay the same or continue to improve, the LA campus will shift from requiring masks to a mask recommendation. Starting on Monday, February 6th, wearing masks will be optional in most circumstances—though wearing them is highly recommended.

Until February 6th, masks will still be required inside the AULA facility. You are encouraged to update your COVID vaccine and/or booster status in the meantime. Wearing a mask indoors continues to be recommended to safeguard one’s own health and that of others. Moreover, anyone wishing to wear a mask at any time may do so and must not be induced to remove it for any reason.

Even after the mask requirement is relaxed, there may be certain classes, spaces, and events where masks are required. Faculty and staff are authorized to require mask-wearing in their classrooms or offices at any time. I am confident everyone will understand and honor such a request. Nevertheless, know that failure to comply with the request may be considered a conduct violation.

Please note that the mask recommendation may change back to a requirement at any time. All members of the AULA community are expected to adhere to the most current protocols. To stay informed, please pay attention to all signage, email notifications, and updates to the AULA “Returning to Campus” Google Site at Returning to LA Campus: COVID Protocols & Information

Finally, I intend to schedule a town hall meeting with students to discuss responses to the recent survey and answer any questions regarding our protocols. I will send out a separate email and invitation to that event shortly. I look forward to the discussion.

Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Provost, AULA

Letter dated December 16, 2022 from AULA Provost Mark Hower to AULA Students, Faculty & Staff

Dear AULA community,

I write to share an important announcement about COVID-19 protocols at the Los Angeles campus for the coming winter quarter. In response to High CDC Community Level COVID ratings for LA County, increased COVID hospitalizations, along with spreading RSV and Flu viruses, the indoor mask requirement will remain in place as the quarter begins January 3rd.

The AU RTF (Reopening Task Force) had begun discussing the possibility of ending indoor mask requirements for the LA campus. However, as a result of changing conditions, the RTF recommended extension of the mask requirement immediately following the winter holidays. Please know the extension of the mask protocol may change during the course of the coming term, and with the right conditions, the mask requirement may be lifted, and masks would then be discretionary.

Thus, the winter quarter on the Los Angeles campus will begin January 3rd with masks required for anyone entering our campus facilities. Once the impact of the winter holidays has been assessed, the mask requirement and other protocols will be reevaluated. I am committed to reporting back to the LA community by January 28th at the latest. At that time or before, I also hope to share the results of the recent student survey.

I recognize this approach is ambiguous, and that can feel challenging. The intent is to provide greater flexibility in our responses to COVID and its impact on our lives as we move forward together as a community.

In the event a mask requirement is relaxed, please keep in mind we may choose to reinstate it at some point, perhaps with very little notice. In that case, it will be important for our shared well-being and community cohesion that the mask protocol be fully respected, whether in classrooms, in the hallways or involving any other indoor setting or constituency.

Because the protocols and other elements of campus operations may change at any time, please pay attention to email notifications and postings in the AULA “Returning to Campus” google site at Returning to LA Campus: COVID Protocols & Information

Finally, I greatly appreciate and thank each of you for your continued efforts to support a healthy community and learning environment. Happy Holidays to you, and I look forward to seeing you as we begin the New Year!

Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Provost, AULA

Letter dated October 18, 2022 from AULA Provost Mark Hower to AULA Students, Faculty & Staff

Dear Antioch Los Angeles Community,

Please be reminded that wearing a mask indoors is required on our campus.  This means having a well-fitting face mask covering the nose and mouth at all times while indoors (e.g. all classrooms, hallways, elevators, restrooms, etc.) on the AULA campus. Failure to comply with the indoor mask mandate at AULA may be viewed as a conduct violation and subject to disciplinary action.

Before entering the Antioch premises, all students, employees, and guests are expected and required to wear a face mask. Starting today, masks will be made available in the building lobby to ensure that everyone can comply.

If you are unsure about AULA's COVID protocols, please review the AULA Returning to Campus Google site.

If you have questions, please let me know.

Thank you.

Fall COVID-19 Protocols

Masks will continue to be required indoors this fall at AULA (and throughout Antioch campuses), However, we will no longer require proof of vaccine status nor will we collect daily health data. (For continuing students, this means no more signing in with the CoVerified app.)

You are strongly encouraged, nevertheless, to be fully vaccinated and to maintain up-to-date boosters. Please continue acting with the same care that has helped us maintain a safe community during the pandemic, including refraining from coming to campus when you test positive or when you may be ill.

I want to reiterate this last point. We look forward to seeing you on campus, and please only come when you are feeling well. If you are not well, take good care of yourself, and contact your course faculty as soon as possible. Please work with them to obtain class materials, arrange for alternate assignments and safe ways to contribute to the learning of your fellow students. In brief, we each have personal responsibility to support and maintain our own health, as well as a healthy learning environment for all.

Eating Areas

Starting this term, lounges and kitchens will be designated for eating and drinking indoors. In these areas (e.g. the first floor Student Lounge), masks may be removed for eating or drinking but the space is not meant for general meeting and socializing. Letter dated September 9, 2022 from AULA Provost Mark Hower to AULA Students, Faculty & Staff

Dear AULA Community,

I write to inform you of changes to the AULA COVID protocols this coming fall term. First, please keep in mind that our previous protocols remain in place during the remainder of summer term. This means through October 2nd, 2022, masks must be worn indoors, and campus entry requires up-to-date vaccine verification and daily health reports using the CoVerified app.

Thank You

I also want to thank each member of the AULA community for the conscientious effort you’ve made personally and collectively to keep the campus environment safe and each other’s health a priority these many months during the pandemic. With our accumulated experience opening the campus, new CDC guidelines in place, and changes in local conditions, some of our campus COVID protocols will be relaxed at the start of fall term, beginning October 3rd.

Fall Protocols

Masks will continue to be required indoors this fall at AULA and throughout Antioch, However, we will no longer require proof of vaccine status nor will we collect daily health data. This means that we will no longer use CoVerified starting on Monday, October, 3, 2022. You are strongly encouraged, nevertheless, to be fully vaccinated and to maintain up-to-date boosters. Please continue acting with the same care that has helped us maintain a safe community during the pandemic, including refraining from coming to campus when symptoms suggest you may be ill or when you test positive.

Protocols and other elements of campus operations may change at any time, of course, so please pay attention to email notifications and postings in the AULA “Returning to Campus” google site at https://sites.google.com/antioch.edu/aulareopening/home.

Eating Areas

In addition, beginning October 3, 2002campus lounges and kitchens will be designated for eating and drinking indoors. In these areas (e.g. the first floor Student Lounge), masks may be removed for eating or drinking but the space is not meant for general meeting and socializing. Masks must be reapplied fully before entering any other part of the building. Additional guidance will be posted at these locations, and your adherence to them will be appreciated and expected.

Fall Campus Operations Schedule

Campus operations and support services will expand this fall to support campus activities and the additional courses scheduled. The campus will be open for operations during the following times:

Monday - 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Tuesday - 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Wednesday - 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Thursdays - 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Fridays – closed, except for special events

Saturdays - 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

HVAC Air

Also, know that our facility upgraded HVAC filtration and maintenance standards just prior to the start of the pandemic, meaning that the air quality in the building is very good. We have also placed additional portable air filtering units in classrooms to ensure that air circulation and filtration is rapid and extensive.

Health Guidance:

Finally, below are recommendations based on recent (August 11th) CDC guidance:

What happens if I just don't feel well?

PLEASE STAY HOME when you do not feel well. Self-isolate until you feel better. While we are all certainly worried about COVID, it is always best practice not to share your germs! Don’t forget to let faculty know you are missing a class activity so that alternatives for the missed class can be arranged when possible. This guidance is meant to support your health, and your school experience—and also because we each must safeguard the health of our community, some of whom may be immunocompromised and thus more vulnerable.

What counts as “close contact” and “exposure” to COVID-19, and what should I do about it?

The CDC defines this as 15 minutes or more in a 24 hour period. If you are exposed to COVID please see CDC guidelines:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/if-you-were-exposed.html

What should I do if I test positive for COVID?

If you do contract COVID please notify those you have been in close contact with so they can monitor themselves for symptoms as well to stop the spread of the virus. The CDC guidance on when to isolate when you contract COVID can be found at:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/isolation.html

The CDC calculator located on this web page can help you to determine when you should return to campus and resume activities.

When should I get tested to determine if I have COVID or can expose others?

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/testing/pdf/When-to-Get-Tested.pdf?v=2

This fact sheet provides a very helpful guide to help you identify when to test to protect those around you.

Where can I go for a COVID test if I decide to get one?

If you decide you should get a COVID test there are nasal swab tests (PCR) and Rapid Antigen tests widely available throughout the region. To search for a testing site near you, please visit the California Department of Public Health website, here: https://myturn.ca.gov/testing.html

I look forward to seeing many of you on campus in fall, and thanks again for your commitment to the health and well-being of the AULA community during a very challenging time.

Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Provost and CEO

Letter dated August 22, 2022 from Chancellor Groves to all Faculty & Staff

Dear Antioch Community,

On a Friday in March 2020, when the entire world was learning of a global pandemic, Antioch University, like many institutions across the country and world, closed its doors.  Antioch reopened the following Monday in a fully online environment with students, faculty, staff, and administrators taking on the responsibilities and work of making teaching and learning happen in new ways.

Despite the advent of vaccines that encouraged a cautious return to pre-pandemic operations, COVID-19 variants and rolling surges of infections have created a “new normal” in which the virus will be endemic for many years to come and vaccines will need to be updated annually.  Therefore, we must work together to foster an environment that promotes student learning while also respecting the safety of our students, colleagues, and communities.

Since the outset of the pandemic, I have worked with the Reopening Task Force (RTF), a University-wide group of faculty and administrators that meets regularly to monitor local conditions and assess our responses, beginning with the implementation of a vaccine mandate and the adoption of CoVerified to ensure compliance with that mandate.  In October of 2021, the RTF recommended to me the implementation of an indoor mask mandate at all Antioch locations to maximize safety as we phased back into in-person learning.  I thank all of you for accepting and working within these guidelines.

Because the pandemic is changing shape as treatments and vaccines become more prevalent, and because society is adapting to COVID-19 in new ways, the RTF is now recommending an update to our procedures around this disease.  Those changes are as follows:

·        Beginning in the fall semester and fall quarter of 2022, we will count on all members of Antioch’s community to remain up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations.  The updated vaccines and boosters that will better protect against the predominant Omicron BA.5 and BA.4 variants will become available starting in September.  Please check with your local health departments about availability and eligibility for these updated vaccines and boosters.

·        We will also require that everyone continue to monitor themselves for COVID-like symptoms, perform at-home tests when appropriate, and isolate with any positive results until you again test negative.

·        If you do test positive and have been in prolonged contact with students, staff or faculty in the previous few days, you should notify campus leadership (or HR, if you are an employee).  They will handle notification and follow-up to encourage testing, monitoring of symptoms, and isolation if symptoms occur.

·        However, we will no longer require daily health-checks and check-ins via CoVerified.  The app essentially works on the honor system as to symptoms and testing, and in the absence of the app, we expect everyone to monitor their symptoms prior to appearing on campus and to stay out of public if symptoms appear.  Antioch’s campuses may require confirmation of vaccination as necessary to enhance safety in some circumstances.

·        Masking will continue to be our practice at Antioch, but since Antioch’s campuses are in four distinct regions, each covered by different state and local recommendations and conditions, modifications of the mask mandate may be considered by the local campus-based communities and residency organizers in consultation with campus personnel.

·        We will continue to follow CDC and state and local guidelines regarding exposure, isolation, and testing.  Please refer to communications from your campus leadership for guidance regarding vaccinations and masking.

Antioch will continue to address the health and well-being of everyone as conditions require.  Further, I know our community will continue to care for all of its members and their dependents, and for our learning environment.  We count on each others’ commitment to a shared space, and therefore to the measures we should take to make that space as inclusive and safe as possible.  We count on each other to consider the well-being of our community as well as our own.  Thank you for your ongoing attention to health measures that make it possible for us to be together, and for recognizing our shared responsibility for creating a safer environment in which to learn.

Letter dated July 5, 2022 from AULA Provost Mark Hower to AULA Students, forwarded to AULA Faculty & Staff

Dear AULA Students:

Welcome to the Summer term at Antioch University Los Angeles. The faculty and staff of AULA are looking forward to working with you, whether you are coming to campus or taking courses remotely.

We have added a few more on-campus courses in some of the programs, and we expect to include still more on-campus courses in the Fall, especially in the MAP and UGS programs. Our campus hours of operation during the summer term are every Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:00 AM TO 10:00 PM and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. We will also be open during specific Fridays through Sundays in support of scheduled on-campus courses and workshops.

Because the Omicron subvariants are widespread in California, we will continue to require that every student, staff, faculty or visitor to our facilities must follow the campus COVID protocols. These include:

Use your @antioch.edu to log in, acknowledge the safety pledge, and upload your vaccine records. There is a one-time administrative approval process for all vaccine records. On the days when you plan to visit the campus, be sure to report your symptoms in the app within four hours prior to arriving to campus. If your vaccine records are approved and if you are able to report “no new symptoms” in the app, your record will be “cleared.” The CoVerified website has a number of FAQ’s and support materials available. Consult CoVerified’s “support portal” or search their knowledge-base for help. If you require additional support using CoVerified, contact the Campus Services Center at csc.aula@antioch.edu

AULA maintains the AULA Returning to Campus Google Site to help with communicating changes in campus Covid-19 protocols. Please bookmark the site and consult it whenever you have questions. The link: Return to AULA Campus

Your course schedule and class syllabi should make it clear whether your registered course will involve remote or on-campus instruction. If you are not sure about your class schedule, contact your department program coordinators, the instructor of the course, or the Integrated Student Services Office to confirm the mode and schedule of instruction.

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Antioch University Los Angeles for the summer term. I wish you a rich, rewarding academic experience, and I look forward to meeting you in the hallways, courtyard or online over the course of the summer term.

Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Letter dated February 16, 2022 from AU VCAA Chet Haskell on behalf of the Reopening Task Force to All AU

Dear Antioch Community:

Antioch University’s response to the pandemic is designed to promote the health of all students and employees.  Our vaccine mandate is an essential element of our response.  The Covid vaccines are safe and effective, and like many vaccinations, they work best when we receive boosters.  To keep our campuses as safe as possible as we start to return to on-campus instruction, we implemented a booster requirement that went into effect on February 1, 2022.

The first booster is due 6 months from the initial vaccine regimen.  If your vaccine–or the second of two in the case of the Pfizer vaccine–was administered prior to September of 2021, your vaccine is now out of date and considered “expired” in CoVerified. If you are vaccinated but have not yet received a booster shot and need to visit campus, you will have until March 1 to update your vaccine records.

For elderly and immunocompromised individuals, the second booster is recommended 4 months after the first booster. Anyone immune compromised is strongly encouraged to get their second booster as recommended by CDC, but we are not requiring a 2nd booster yet.

We appreciate the way the Antioch community has stepped up and accepted this mandate as an important part of our response to a dangerous pandemic.  We encourage you to get the booster at your earliest convenience and to upload your documentation to CoVerified for verification.

Students with questions, concerns or requests for medical or religious exemption should contact their School dean or Campus provost/associate provost (listed below). Antioch employees with further questions should contact their campus CEO (listed below). Finally, faculty and staff seeking medical or religious exemption must do so through the Human Resources Office.

Stay safe, Antioch, and we will look forward to being back to more on-campus activities this spring.

Letter dated January 27, 2022 from AULA Provost Mark Hower to AULA Students, forwarded to AULA Faculty & Staff

Dear AULA Students,

I write to give you an update about the plans to open the campus in a limited schedule beginning February 1st.

Campus Open Schedule

AULA will be open again for limited operations beginning next week. Operational hours will be:

Tuesdays      noon to 7:00 PM

Wednesdays   11:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Thursdays    9:00 AM to 1:00 PM

The Office of Campus Services will be open during these times.  You may contact the Campus Serves team at csc.aula@antioch.edu if you have questions or wish to gain access to the computer lab or reserve a room (for example, to participate in a Zoom session).

Other campus facilities are not fully open at this time, so please make contact with a representative by email or Zoom to conduct business or set up an appointment as schedules allow.

Though COVID-19 transmission rates and other key health indicators are dropping in the LA area, the pandemic continues and adjustments to even this limited approach may be made at any time.

On-Campus Classes

The majority of classes will remain in remote instructional formats during the remainder of this term.

ONLY a few approved MAP and UGS courses will be held on campus during the remainder of the term (from a subset—not all—of those initially designated as on-campus classes during registration). These approved courses will shift to on campus instruction beginning as soon as next week or in subsequent weeks.

Students registered in the designated on-campus courses will be contacted by the course faculty to provide any additional information. Course instructors will communicate with their students about which dates and times apply. If you as a student don’t receive information about timing of on-campus classes, your course will continue remotely. Nevertheless, if you have a question about this, check with your program PCs and admin staff to verify the status of your class going forward.

Entry Protocols

For anyone who will be joining us in the campus classrooms or anywhere indoors on campus, it is absolutely essential that you show the green “CLEARED” CoVerified badge at  the Campus Services desk (to receive the required verification wristband), wear a well-fitting mask at all times indoors, and follow any additional conduct and safety protocols or instructions developed to safeguard the health of each member of our community and by extension, the others in their lives.

You are encouraged to wear an N95, KN95 or KF94 Respirator mask, and if you do not have access to this type of mask, you may obtain one at the Campus Service desk. Here is additional guidance about masks from the CDC:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/types-of-masks.html

Courtesy Tests

Finally, as a courtesy, especially for those intending to start on-site classes in the coming week(s), you are encouraged to come to campus on Monday, January 31st from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM to participate in a voluntary PCR COVID test administered in the courtyard area of our campus.

I look forward to seeing you safely, in-person, and look forward to continuing to support your learning journey in challenging times.

Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Provost, AULA

Letter dated January 24, 2022 from AU VCAA Chet Haskell on behalf of the Reopening Task Force to All AU

Dear Antioch Faculty, Staff and Students,

The Antioch University Reopening Task Force (RTF)  recently met to consider the next steps in terms of on-site teaching.  As you may recall, our  last communication indicated a continuation of remote teaching through the end of January in order to protect our learning community during the Omicron surge.  While it appears that the variant may have peaked in some parts of the country, in other parts it is still raging through the population and causing major disruptions.  Based on the available data as well as our institutional  health and safety protocols, the decisions are as follows:

The determination of a limited return to on-site teaching beginning February 1 will be made by campus leadership with University approval, based on regional conditions.  This means that a selective set of classes may be shifted to onsite delivery on one campus in one part of the country while a different decision may be made for another Antioch campus.  This location-based approach allows for maximum flexibility and caution as we consider the regional differences in this incredibly fast-changing and oft-unpredictable pandemic.

Further communication about classes at a particular campus location will be coming out shortly.  If you have questions, please check with your department or program chair or your Campus Provost/School Dean.

Remember, anyone coming on to an Antioch facility for any reason must provide verification of vaccination status using the CoVerified system and/or have secured a religious or disability exemption from the University’s vaccine mandate. Religious or disability exemptions for students should be directed to the appropriate Campus Provost or School Dean. Religious or disability exemptions for faculty and staff should be directed to the appropriate Campus/School Human Resources Representative.

AULA Announcement: No on-campus Classes through Jan 31, 2022

Dear AULA Community:

I write to provide a reminder and additional update on AULA campus operations in the next few weeks. As you know, in response to the surge of the omicron variant of COVID-19, the AU Reopening Task Force determined that all planned on-campus classes for winter will continue to be shifted to remote instruction through January 31st.

Local health conditions will continue to be monitored, of course, and updates will be sent out to keep you informed

The Campus Service Center and campus operations will also be remote for the coming 2 weeks (1/17/22 - 1/30/2022). The campus facility will not have open hours for public access during these two weeks. However, the Campus Services Center Virtual Front Desk is and will be available and staffed for drop-in assistance via Zoom from Monday-Thursday 9am-7:30pm, Friday 9am-5pm, and Saturday 8am-6pm. Of course, during this period, AULA employees may still come and go as needed for essential work—as long as they use our CoVerified reporting system (and obtain the green "CLEARED" badge) prior to entering the building and also wear appropriate, well-fitting masks while indoors.

More information will be forthcoming soon, and in the meantime, remember that vaccines are an important defense against COVID-19. If you have not done so already, be sure to get your vaccine and booster, once you are eligible. Masks are also important, and given the nature of omicron, you are encouraged to wear upgraded masks (e.g. N95, KN95, and KF94 or similar masks) as possible.

As always, the health and safety of the AULA community is our greatest concern, and we recognize this is made all the more important because each of you also interact with and live with others.

 Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Provost, AULA & AUSB

Letter dated January 4, 2022 from AULA Provost Mark Hower to All AULA

Dear AULA Students, Faculty and Staff,

Welcome to the Winter 2022 term. I hope you had a happy, rejuvenating holiday season.

During the holiday break, the omicron variant was surging throughout the country, LA included. In response, the AU Reopening Task Force decided that all AU campuses would be required to shift scheduled campus-based classes to remote formats for the first two weeks of the term, until January 18th. In the small number of courses to which this shift applies in LA (all from the MAP or UGS programs), the class meeting time and day remains the same, but the class will be held in a remote format such as Zoom. For the majority of our classes, already scheduled in a remote format, no changes are required.

The Task Force decision took place while case numbers and test positivity rates in LA were doubling in days. Hospitalizations have also increased, though significantly, not at the same rate. However, the Task Force recognized that sheer numbers of new cases create greater uncertainty and challenge—and are more likely to overwhelm already overstretched health systems and communities. It was believed the delay of on-campus classes to January 18th should provide some time to better understand the impact of the surge post-holiday season.

From now until January 18th, the campus will still be open, on a reduced schedule, but no classes will be held in person. During this two-week period, we will open the campus on Tuesdays through Thursdays, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Campus Services staff will be on duty, but for students wanting to meet with an adviser or other staff, please set up an appointment to ensure you are able to meet with your intended contact.

As always, before entering the building you will be required to first complete the CoVerified application regarding vaccine and health status. And, a properly fitted mask will be required at all times in the building.

If you do plan to come to campus, please be sure you’ve set up your CoVerified account. We sent out a short update about the process recently, and below you will find links to get started if you have not done so already.

Please login to coverified.us using your @antioch.edu email address to set up your account and upload your vaccination records there. Also I recommend downloading the CoVerified app to your smartphone. Doing so will streamline your access to campus by providing you with a green "CLEARED" badge once you complete your daily health checks.

I want to note that while we intend to continue to open up the campus more fully this term and in future terms, we must balance that desire with our commitment to providing the conditions that keep you and those around you as safe as possible.

Thus, for the foreseeable future, as we deal with the general ambiguity and emerging challenges that characterize the pandemic, we may need to make adjustments in our operations and schedules. What won’t change, however, is our commitment to providing a safe campus environment and in supporting students in achieving their educational goals.

I will send out updates in the near future, and I look forward to seeing you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Provost, AULA and AUSB

Letter dated December 29, 2021 from AU Reopening Task Force to All AU

Dear Antioch community,

In light of the dramatic increase of COVID cases across the country and the expectations of a post-holiday surge, Antioch University is taking the prudent step of delaying its return to in-person instruction until Tuesday, January 18.    This means that for all Antioch locations, Winter instruction will begin remotely on January 3. Please be on the lookout for more specific announcements from your Dean or campus CEO/provost.

This is a volatile situation.  We recognize the need for flexibility and hope you understand the reasoning for this shift to remote delivery for the beginning of the new term.   Delaying the start of in-person instruction aligns with almost all higher education institutions across the country and is consistent with our continuing concern for the health and safety of all Antioch students, faculty and staff

The other major decision made by the Chancellor upon recommendation of the University’s Reopening Task Force is the requirement that all those who come on to an Antioch campus have evidence of booster shots when eligible.  This requirement will take effect on February 1, 2022. After that date, employees, visitors and students eligible for a booster will need to have uploaded proof of booster vaccination into the CoVerified system in order to access an Antioch campus. After February 1, 2022, CoVerified will continually identify those who are eligible for a booster once six months has elapsed after their second shot.  While more information will be forthcoming in subsequent communications, we wanted to provide early notification for all community members.

We will continue to provide you with updates on University COVID-related decisions as promptly and transparently as possible.  In the meantime, please be sure to be vaccinated and to get your booster when eligible.

Students with questions should contact their School dean (listed below). Antioch employees with further questions should contact your campus CEO (listed below). Finally, faculty and staff seeking medical or religious exemption must be do so through the Human Resources Office.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we pursue our academic and social mission in these challenging times.

Sincerely,

Letter dated December 22, 2021 from AU Reopening Task Force to All AU Employees

Dear Colleagues,

The Antioch University Reopening Task Force wants to share a critical update. At this point (December 22), we are continuing with the plan for the upcoming term and the classes that have been designated to be onsite. We are taking all precautions such as vaccination requirements and verification with CoVerified, onsite mask mandates, and facilities' improvements.  However, as we are well aware, the Omicron variant is surging and while our intention is to proceed as planned, the reality of the next few weeks needs to be watched carefully.  And we are.

We recognize the different situations of each Antioch location and program, and urge you to be in contact with your Dean or Campus CEO if there are specific questions. It is particularly important for Program Chairs to be in close communication with the academic leaders.

The Reopening Task Force will be meeting throughout the holiday break and if changes need to be made in the planning, we will announce them as soon as possible.  Rest assured,  the health and safety of our community learning will be the paramount concern.

We urge everyone who hasn’t already been vaccinated and boosted to do so immediately. The vaccines are the best tools we have to protect ourselves, our loved ones and members of our communities. We particularly want to encourage those who are vaccinated to get their boosters as they seem to be our best line of defense against the Omicron variant. To find a site near you to get the vaccines or the booster, visit here.  We are confident that the caring for each other that characterizes the Antioch community will continue to help protect everyone.

May your holiday season be filled with joy, health and well-being.

Letter dated December 20, 2021 from AULA Provost Mark Hower to All AULA

Dear AULA Community:

Last week, you should have received via email a link notifying you about your access to CoVerified, the vendor that Antioch has contracted with to support our vaccination mandate. Please follow the instructions in that email to upload your proof of vaccination to CoVerified if you intend to take classes on campus or visit any Antioch location at any time after January 1. CoVerified will help us ensure that all visitors to our campus ( students, faculty, staff, and guests) are vaccinated as required by our institution. If you do not intend to visit campus any time this winter, you will not need to engage with CoVerified in any way.

For easy reference, here is your “Quick Start” guide:

Letter dated December 14, 2021 from AULA Provost Mark Hower to All AULA

Dear AULA Community:

The holiday season is nearly upon us, and I wish you a happy, restful break. The winter quarter will begin on January 3rd, 2022, and I want to make sure you are aware of new procedures for maintaining the health and safety of our campus community starting winter quarter.

While most courses will continue to be taught remotely, this winter, several of the MAP sections and Undergraduate courses will be held on campus. Course schedules and class syllabi should make it clear what expectations will be for on-campus instruction. Students, if you are not sure about your class schedule, contact your department program coordinators or the instructor of the course to confirm the mode of instruction for a specific course.

Here are a few very important notes and updates:

The most important thing you can do between now and the new year is to stay healthy. The winter break will be an opportunity to participate in gatherings and to be close to friends and family, and that will also increase our chances of getting COVID. Have fun and enjoy being with family and friends, but also please get vaccinated or a booster shot if you haven’t already and wear your mask as circumstances require it.

Have a wonderful, happy and safe holiday season!

Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Letter dated November 24, 2021 from Chancellor Bill Groves to all AU employees

Dear Antiochians,

Many of you are asking about Antioch University’s next steps with regard to the continuing pandemic.  The short answer is that we are phasing in many more onsite classes this Winter at each campus, but will not be fully returning until Spring on the West Coast and Summer in New England.  Even then, we have evolved pedagogically during this pandemic.  We will never return completely to a pre-COVID world and programs will offer a mix of synchronous learning options to accommodate all student preferences.  So, the purpose of this email is (1) to provide you with an update about our continuing COVID protocols and phased approach to reopening, and (2) to look down the road past the pandemic to describe what the new normal might look like from a pedagogical perspective.

That we are in different regions of the country, that yet another surge is occurring around the globe, that the U.S. continues to have large numbers of unvaccinated persons, all impact not only our personal lives and choices, but also our institutional strategies and decisions. I am eager to share all the good planning and the commitment of our faculty and staff to provide the best possible Antioch education in such unpredictable times.

In the immediate months ahead, we will continue to phase in more and more face-to-face classes and services at our four campus locations.  We have been diligently preparing our campus sites, expanding classroom space, installing better ventilation systems, implementing vaccination verification systems, acquiring new academic technology to support simulcast teaching, and working hard to create optimal onsite experiences.   Many more on-site courses will be offered in January than were offered this past Fall.  The intention is to continue to offer more classes and services on-site in the coming months especially in Spring 2022

As I talk with our faculty, administrators, and staff across the University, it is clear we have become better trained and better skilled with the use of technologies to improve teaching and learning in a variety of modalities, including simulcast opportunities, so learners can be both on-site and online.  Each campus is slightly different due to the programs offered and courses delivered, as well as considerations such as the region’s contagion rates and the building’s size, classroom sizes, and capacity.  This all impacts what is offered and how.  In every case, however, I am seeing a rich array of onsite, online, and hybrid options going forward in the coming months.  I am confident all necessary protocols are in place to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff.   Campus CEOs/Provosts/Deans have been in regular communication with campus constituencies about specific local plans and protocols for their programs.  If you have questions, please reach out to your campus CEO, Provost, or Dean (see contact list below) for more details specific to your program.

And that leads to our longer-term planning.  What is our vision for the future?  Whether or not COVID becomes endemic across the land as many scientists and health experts predict, what students want and how universities deliver has forever changed.  We will NOT simply be going back to February 2020.  Many of our current students have NEVER been on our campuses, and survey results suggest that many prefer not to ever attend place-based classes.  That may be due to a combination of lingering COVID risks, drive times, convenience, and other factors, but what we’ve learned is that many students prefer the distance learning model through Zoom or hybrid models that creatively combine in-persona and at-at-distance.  So, we know that flexibility in the ways we teach and learn is paramount, and we have an amazing opportunity ahead to be creative and innovative.  We also recognize the geographic expanse of our learning community and that serving them involves a range of on-site and distance delivery options. There are a host of creative possibilities as our faculty and Schools look to the future.

With decades of experience with hybrid, weekend and low-residency programs, as well as what we have learned about remote options through Zoom, we have the capability to offer high-quality experiences for students regardless of location or academic goals. There is an exciting future of experimentation ahead and this will become increasingly valuable as higher education continues to evolve.  Each of our programs will be evaluating those options and communicating further with you about future modalities and options in mixed-synchronous learning.  Again, these decisions will be partially driven by the continuing risk of COVID, and partially driven by the desire to present programs in the modalities most convenient to students while still maintaining our high quality.

I want to thank all for their hard work, care, and commitment. I wish you all a safe, joyous, and peaceful holiday season.

Sincerely,

Bill

Letter dated November 16, 2021 from Provost Mark Hower to all AULA students. Forwarded to all AULA staff and faculty

Dear AULA Students,

I want to provide you with an update on our campus and program plans beginning in January 2022. We have surveyed students, and consulted with program chairs and faculty, and in conjunction with those responses, with favorable health trends in the Los Angeles area overall, we are preparing to hold more classes, services and activities on campus this winter quarter.

The campus will be open, though still in a modified schedule compared with pre-pandemic patterns. We will continue to follow county health requirements and university guidelines. You will need to wear a mask while indoors, submit verification of your vaccine status, and complete a daily health screening check, but with these precautions, the campus will be more available to you.

You will be able to participate in your registered campus-based classes, visit the library, use the computer lab, check in with the Student Services office, participate in campus events, and so forth. If you need study space or a place to participate in a Zoom session, you will be able to arrange that.

Programs will hold classes depending on a range of program circumstances and needs. For instance, most core MAP courses will have at least one section held on campus and other sections with remote delivery. The core MAP courses held on campus will be scheduled primarily on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For now, MAP specialization courses will be in a remote format, though we are looking into adding a few workshops, perhaps on the weekends.

Several Undergraduate courses will be held on campus, and of course other remote options will continue to be available as well.

Our MFA and USMA programs have successfully delivered remote residencies recently, though program staff and faculty are exploring holding residencies on campus when logistical arrangements (travel, lodging, meals, etc.) and health conditions allow face to face residencies, perhaps in summer 2022.

Education classes are scheduled for virtual delivery only at this point.

Campus hours of operation will also be increased to correspond with the classroom schedules and students will have access to services and campus facilities (e.g. library, computer lab, etc.) during specified hours. We will provide more details about the program and campus hours and activities in the near future.

In the meantime, I encourage you to be prepared for the protocols for visiting campus. It is especially important that you complete or work toward completing the vaccination verification process so you have that in order before classes start in January. I include the other elements of the building entry protocol below.

Anyone who visits the campus must 1) complete the safety pledge, 2) provide proof of vaccination, 3) complete the daily health screening, and 4) wear a face mask covering the nose and mouth while indoors at all times (unless alone in a private office with the door closed). The pledge and the vaccination verification can be done any time in advance. The health screening must be done within 4 hours prior to your arrival on campus.

To complete the AULA COVID-19 Safety Pledge, please do so here

To complete the AULA Vaccine Verification Form, please do so here

To complete the AULA Daily Health Screening, please do so here

Thank you for your attention to these protocols, and I look forward to seeing many of you on campus in the near future.

Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Letter dated September 23, 2021 from Provost Mark Hower to all AULA students, staff, and faculty

Dear AULA Students, Faculty and Staff,

I write to share more details about the access and use of the campus in the upcoming fall quarter. I want to emphasize here that to start with, we will begin with very limited services, hours of operation, and classes. As the quarter progresses, we hope to be able to add additional elements to this plan. Of course, the health and safety of all of you is paramount, so the circumstances of the pandemic will determine any changes implemented, whether to open up more or restrict access to campus.

Health and Safety Requirements

As you know, AULA will require anyone (faculty, staff, students, guests) entering the building or any AULA space to first be fully vaccinated, to complete a daily wellness check and to properly wear a face mask at all times while indoors. Faculty, staff, and students will also be required to sign the AULA COVID-19 Safety Pledge. Failure to observe any one of these requirements can be a violation of our ethics and conduct codes.

To upload your vaccination record, please complete the AULA Vaccine Verification Form here

To complete the AULA Daily Health Screening, please do so here

To complete the AULA COVID-19 Safety Pledge, please do so here

Faculty and Staff Access

Because we will require proof of vaccination, wearing of masks, and a wellness check prior to entering campus, the campus facilities will be available to staff and faculty who chose to work in the building outside of our posted operational hours.

Limited Official Hours of Operation

From the time we begin the Fall 2021 quarter on October 4th, the campus will be open, and the Campus Services Center will be staffed when there are classes scheduled in the building. Hours of operation will be 12:00 Noon to 4:00 PM on Wednesdays and 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Thursdays only. This will allow us to support the handful of classes in session and will also allow a window for in person services as scheduled by appointment.

Who can be on campus

Students are free to come into the building facilities if/when they:

1) have signed the community health pledge,

2) have submitted proof of vaccination, are wearing a mask, and have completed the daily wellness check,

3) are enrolled in a class scheduled to meet on campus, during class times,

4) have an appointment to meet on campus with a staff or faculty member or have an appointment to use the library, computer lab, Teaching and Learning Center, etc. during hours of operation, and

5) follow safety protocols once on campus.

Staff and Faculty may come to campus at any time if:

1)    the community health pledge has been signed,

2)    they have submitted proof of vaccination, are wearing a mask, and have completed the daily wellness check, and

3)    they follow safety protocols once on campus.

Parking

Anyone wishing to use the parking garage will want to make sure they have an activated parking access card. Request a new card or that a previous one be activated by emailing Campus Services Center at csc.aula@antioch.edu

AULA Reopening Site

The AULA Reopening site contains important information, links, and FAQ. This resource will be kept current as campus operations evolve, so I encourage you to visit the site regularly for updates and changes. The AULA Reopening Google Site can be found here.

Survey Coming Soon

A survey will soon be sent to all students to gather new information about how to best support your educational journey and campus experience going forward during the pandemic. I encourage you to take a few minutes to fill out the survey when you receive it as the data will help us understand what you are experiencing, how we can prioritize our actions, and how we might be able to support you in person.

Sincerely,

Mark Hower, PhD

Provost, AULA

Letter dated July 29, 2021 from Provost Mark Hower to all AULA students

Dear AULA Students,

I want to provide a brief update from Chancellor William Groves about revised campus reopening protocols. Chancellor Groves announced earlier today that both face masks and vaccines will be required for anyone (faculty, staff, students or guests) entering Antioch facilities when the campuses begin the process of reopening in the fall. In Los Angeles, assuming health and safety conditions support a phased return to campus, that process will begin for students on October 4th, 2021.

The Chancellor's message follows, and further details will be provided in the near future.

Best,

Mark Hower

Provost AULA

Letter dated July 28, 2021 from Chancellor Groves to all Antioch employees

Dear Colleagues:

As I’ve shared in the past, the University's response to the pandemic and our reopening plans may evolve given the fluidity of the situation and the advancements in our scientific understanding of the risks.  We now see the exponential spread in the Delta variant across the country accounting for over 83% of the new cases.  There's a reason for that rapid spread.  While the original COVID-19 virus was highly contagious, the CDC recently reported that the Delta variant is roughly twice as transmissible. Moreover, while fully vaccinated individuals are well protected from serious illness from this variant, they can still become infected, and once infected, can build up enough viral load of the Delta variant to become contagious.  This can happen even if they have no apparent symptoms.   Even more alarming is evidence that the Delta variant is twice as likely to result in hospitalization for unvaccinated individuals.

For these reasons, the CDC has recently doubled down on its efforts to get people vaccinated and has modified its mask protocols.  It now recommends that everyone, including fully vaccinated individuals, wear face coverings while indoors and in close proximity to others.    Many states are reinstituting mask mandates for all residents and a number of public and private employers are requiring vaccination verification to work on site. Colleges and universities are doing the same, from the University of California (https://uhs.berkeley.edu/requirements/covid19)  to the University of Indiana (https://www.iu.edu/covid/prevention/covid-19-vaccine.html).

For these reasons, the Antioch Reopening Task Force has made a recommendation that we modify our reopening protocols and I have approved that recommendation.  This will not change the previously announced dates for reopening in any way.  However, Antioch University will now require that all students, faculty, staff and visitors who come onto an Antioch campus or attend an Antioch sponsored event be fully vaccinated, and provide pre-verification of vaccination status.  In addition, all students, faculty, staff and visitors in a University facility will be required to properly wear a face mask over their mouth and nose at all times while in our buildings.   With over 90% of Antiochians already vaccinated, we are much further along in this effort than society generally.   So, for that I thank you.   But, to protect the health and safety of our learning community, vaccination and masking must become universal on our campuses until such time as it is safe to relax those standards.

We are exploring the technology for providing pre-verification of vaccine status and will put systems in place before buildings open.  Please watch for a follow-up announcement from me about the process to be followed for submitting proof of vaccination as well as procedures for requesting medical or religious accommodations.

Sincerely,

William R. Groves, J.D.

Chancellor

Antioch University
