As a graduate nursing student in either the Master of Science-Family Nurse Practitioner or Master of Science-Nurse Educator program, you must create an ePortfolio. The ePortfolio showcases and validates your mastery of knowledge and skills gained during the program. Students will develop their ePortfolio each semester throughout the program, providing evidence aligning with the competency standards outlined in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials (2021). The AACN Essentials encompass 10 Domains guiding the student’s progress and proficiency throughout their academic journey.
The 10 Domains are:
v Domain 1 Knowledge for Nursing Practice
v Domain 2 Person-Centered Care
v Domain 3 Population Health
v Domain 4 Scholarship for the Nursing Discipline
v Domain 5 Quality and Safety
v Domain 6 Interprofessional Partnerships
v Domain 7 Systems-Based Practice
v Domain 8 Informatics and Healthcare Technologies
v Domain 9 Professionalism
v Domain 10 Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development
Students will receive information, instructions, and tutorial guides for developing their ePortfolio during the MSN Online Orientation. Additionally, ongoing access to these resources will be available throughout the program to support ePortfolio development. An ePortfolio template will be provided, and students will use Google Sites (via Apps@ASU) to create and share their ePortfolio.
To demonstrate and validate the mastery of knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program, students will include supporting evidence, also known as artifacts, such as projects, scholarly papers, videos, PowerPoint presentations, images, evaluations, and forms, each accompanied by a brief reflection to illustrate competency. In the final semester of the program, students will write an overall reflection for each of the 10 Domains demonstrating their attainment of competency. Students are responsible for collecting and organizing this data within their ePortfolio.
An ePortfolio is an electronic compilation of work demonstrating the progress of learning over time. A digital portfolio empowers graduate nursing students to be accountable for their educational journey and share learning achievements with others. The ePortfolio provides the student with a platform to arrange, record, and present learning experiences in a single digital platform.
Students will use the ePortfolio to demonstrate their ability to integrate knowledge obtained during the course of study. Additionally, the graduate nursing student will develop their ePortfolio to meet the following objectives:
v Demonstrate achievement of the MSN Program Learning Outcomes
v Demonstrate professional development throughout the MSN program
v Demonstrate competency in the AACN Essentials 10 Domains.
Students will work on their ePortfolio throughout the MSN program to ensure continuous reflection and learning, thus enabling the integration of theoretical knowledge with practicum experiences over time. Successfully developing your ePortfolio begins by thoroughly understanding the requirements as outlined in this guide and the ePortfolio grading rubric. Regular updates help maintain a detailed and accurate record of academic and clinical achievements, allowing for a comprehensive showcase of skills and competencies.
Developing the ePortfolio requires a significant time investment, with students expected to invest a minimum of 80-100 hours to complete the ePortfolio.
By distributing the workload, students can avoid the stress of last-minute compilation and produce a more thoughtful and balanced effort. Working on the portfolio consistently enhances skills in self-assessment, organization, and documentation, preparing students for future career opportunities. It ensures alignment with the curriculum and program requirements, showcasing progress and development in essential areas. Additionally, it documents the evolution of the student's professional identity, making the ePortfolio a personalized story of their journey. This approach keeps students engaged and motivated, promoting a deeper understanding of their field and highlighting their accomplishments and milestones. Ultimately, working on the portfolio throughout the program supports academic and professional success.
ePortfolio due dates are based on the intended graduation date from the MSN program. Students will be notified of the exact due date for the completed ePortfolio by the graduate faculty at the beginning of the student’s final semester.
Students should aim to complete their ePortfolio at least two weeks before the final deadline for initial review, ensuring the final submission aligns with the due date. To the right is the schedule for completed ePortfolios based on track and graduation month.
The ePortfolio is configured on several pages:
Introduction Page
MSN Student Learning Outcomes Page
Domains Page with 10 subpages for each domain
Clinical Evidence Page
To ensure consistent and objective evaluation, student ePortfolios must adhere to the following criteria:
Introduction Page
The introduction page of an ePortfolio serves as the initial point of contact between the student and the audience. Its primary purpose is to provide a concise and engaging overview of who you are, what you do, and what visitors can expect to find in your ePortfolio.
MSN Student Learning Outcomes Page
Students will provide a reflection demonstrating how the student achieved each Student Learning Outcomes throughout the MSN program. The student will provide examples of how the learning outcome was met, and how the knowledge and skills learned will impact future practice as an advanced-level nurse.
Domains Page and Subpages
The Domains page consists of a main page titled “Domains” and 10 subpages (one (1) subpage for each domain). Throughout the student’s MSN educational journey, the student will upload artifacts and write a short reflection about the artifact describing how the learning experience associated with the artifact guided the student toward achieving competency in the domain.
In the final semester of the student’s program, the student will write a final reflection encompassing knowledge and skills learned that demonstrate the student’s competency for each of the 10 Domains.
Clinical Evidence
Students will upload clinical documents from each clinical course and write a short reflection about the clinical course.
How do I get started?
The ePortfolio Guidelines and Instructions handbook will be available to students at the beginning of the first semester the student begins in the program in the ASU Graduate Nursing Program organization in Blackboard. It is recommended students print the handbook to guide the development of their ePortfolio throughout the MSN journey.
