SDG Publications Mapping: A Campus-Wide Initiative
Our faculty publications mapping project aligns academic output with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and was completed through a four-phase process:
Initial Mapping (Fall 2023): Systematic categorization of faculty research against SDG frameworks.
Visualization Development (Spring 2024): Creation of an interactive dashboard by Information Systems students.
Revised Mapping (Fall 2024): Expansion of the project to include latest publications.
Refinement Phase (Spring 2025): Final adjustments to improve accuracy and usability.
Currently,
653 publications produced between 2004 and 2024 are displayed on a Tableau dashboard.
Dashboard Configuration
The visualization (see Table) shows CMU-Q publications from 2004-2024 that align with various SDGs, using the official SDG color coding system. It consists of:
A bubble chart showing the distribution of publications by SDG (top left)
A stacked bar chart showing the count of publications by year and SDG (bottom)
A data table displaying publication details when an SDG is selected (top right)
Click on any SDG bubble or colored bar section to filter and view related publications.
Takeaway Message
This initiative aims at:
Sparking strategic dialogue with faculty about current and future research directions
Enhancing institutional transparency through accessible digital visualization
Creating meaningful cross-departmental collaboration among students, faculty, staff, and administrators
Our approach was informed by the work done on our main campus and provides a replicable framework for other academic institutions seeking to demonstrate their contributions to global sustainability goals.
