Hey there, my name is Lowndes Pendergrass and I will be your 8th grade science teacher for the 2025-26 school year here at Southwood. I am extremely excited and hope that you guys are looking forward to getting started!
I am thrilled to be part of the greatest 8th grade team here at Southwood. This year will be my 8th year in education after having transitioned from my previous background in geology and environmental science.
Classroom Supplies
Aside from the general middle school supplies that are posted on the district website, I recommend students have:
at least 2-3 single subject notebooks that we will be using throughout the year. I recommend composition notebooks, but spiral or even loose leaf paper and a binder are perfectly fine depending on your preference.
Pocket folder for handouts
Colored pencils, scissors, and glue are available but students are welcome to supply their own.
This year, only wired headphones/ear buds will be allowed. Bluetooth headphone/ear buds are no longer allowed.
If there are any other specific supplies or consumables that we may need throughout the year, I will make sure to give students and parents ample time to pick them up.
Safety Glasses
Students will not need to provide their own safety glasses. Current 8th grade students will use the same pair they were assigned last year and extras are available for new students. We will use these when conducting experiments and investigations.
Chromebooks
We will be using Chromebooks on a daily basis for various applications so it is important that students bring them each day as well as their charger just in case their battery runs low throughout the day.
Grading Policy
Anderson 5 has set a standard grading policy across the district where major assignments are 60% of a student's grade, and minor assignments are 40%. For this class, “Major” assignments will include unit tests, chapter tests, major quizzes, and/or projects that are completed in class. “Minor” assignments will include daily grades, small quizzes, lab reflections and any other small daily assignments.
