Saying Goodbye
Alice Youtz
Alice Youtz
The moon caught us walking
My love and I
As the waves crashed against our feet
Salty, harsh kiss
Of saying goodbye to the woes of this world.
We walked in deep, sand escaping beneath our worn feet
The dangerous blue of the water capturing pieces of the moon
That set the vast space alight with our hope
And let the dark parts become darker.
I looked to my lover
And saw that Death had replaced her with bony hands
But Death’s fingers were a grounding point for me
A bone or two to hold on
While following the circle of the moon
So Death and I continued to wade into the water
Peaceful and sad.
Darkness, pervasive, a beautiful fear that sang to my heart
And comforted my soul
Sea water soaking me, lapping at me
Covering me
Suffocating me
Soothing me
As Death and I walked on.
-----
The moon caught us walking
My Death and I
But before the dark and beautiful waves came over my head, I looked up
And saw the beginnings of the sunrise.
