29th Annual Conference: Talk ASAP: The Africa-Asia Pacific Dialogue on Communication Issues
Why an Africa- Asia Pacific Dialogue and Exchange? The following reasons can be put forward: (1) Majority of the emerging and developing countries are from these two continents (i.e., 29 from Asia and 54 from Africa); (2) Population of these two continents combined represents 77 percent of the global population (as of 2020)[1]; (3) Many countries in both continents tend to use the West as development benchmark; (4) There are many similarities in the socio-political context between Asia and Africa; and (5) There are many common communication, media, and information issues that countries in these two continents are facing.
The pioneering initiative for dialogue between the two continents is the 1955 Asian-African Conference popularly known as the Bandung Conference which was described as “the first significant gathering of independent and soon-to-be independent nations in Asia and Africa.”
Talk ASAP (Africa-Asia Pacific Dialogue on Communication Issues) will serve as a platform for renewed South-South knowledge-sharing and peer-learning mechanism, i.e., to share experiences, perspectives, ideas and lessons, tools, and technologies and to provide opportunities for intra-regional, interregional, and intercontinental cooperation.
Currently, there is no exclusive venue for dialogue and exchange of lessons and experiences between Asia and Africa, particularly in the communication and media sectors.
The 29th Annual Conference will jumpstart a sustained cooperative program among institutions from both continents featuring offline/online forums including seminars/webinars, and training courses; collaborative research and development; joint publications and exchange (e.g., online/offline books and journals); and faculty/scholars/students’ exchange.
Conference Objectives
The Conference has the following specific objectives:
To share and exchange lessons and experiences, especially best practices, in addressing common communication media issues and concerns;
To promote Afro-Asian communication scholarship through collaborative academic initiatives;
To provide a venue for networking among Asian and African communication professionals and institutions for collaborative programs/projects in research, publications, forums, faculty/student exchanges, etc.; and
To explore the feasibility of adopting a mechanism for inter-continental consultation toward consensus-building for current and emerging global communication issues.
