Section 1: Inquiry Question and Concept Exploration
Explanation of the guiding question or concept
Inquiry Statement: How can printmaking be used to explore and express aspects of my culture in a visually powerful way?
Inquiry Writing: - Printmaking can be used to explore and express aspects of my culture by turning meaningful symbols, patterns, and traditions into visual designs. Using techniques like repetition and contrast, I can highlight important parts of my identity and tell cultural stories without words. This process can help reflect on what matters most in someones culture while creating artwork that is both visually strong and meaningful.
Section 2: Connections
Cultural, historical, and artistic influences with critical evaluation.
Artist:
Maria Doyle (maz.prints)
From the United Kingdom
Artworks are based mostly on Edinburgh, Scotland
Two Artworks:
Thick black outlines around main shapes
Areas of solid black vs white
Repeated carved lines showing texture
Direction of lines to show movement
Some variety of color and a lot of shapes
Type of Printing:
Maz.prints mainly uses linocut printmaking. This involves carving a design into lino, inking it, and pressing it onto paper.
Maz.prints uses bold, simplified shapes with strong black outlines that make the design easy to see from far away. The contrast between black ink and white space creates a very graphic and striking effect. The carved lines add texture and help show details like feathers or leaves without using too many colors.
The artist’s designs are made up of mostly simple, bold shapes rather than tiny details, which is typical of linocut printing. The lines vary in thickness, with thicker outlines and thinner interior marks for texture. She uses positive and negative space very carefully, allowing the white areas to define parts of the image just as much as the black ink. The composition usually fills the space well, with patterns and repeated marks creating movement and balance. Most prints use very limited colors, often just black and one additional color, making the artwork feel clean and graphic.
What is a Muti-Block linocut print? (Day #3)
Multi-block linocut is a block printing method in which more than one piece of lino is used to create a design. Often, each colour to be printed is carved onto a separate lino block.
