Follow the same pattern for each week we work through the Wonders material

Tuesday

Students work in pairs to read through and discuss the essential question
Teacher does the interactive read aloud focusing on the essential question and teacher directed activities as outlined by the teacher book
Students read through the vocabulary words and use context clues to discuss meanings with a partner.
Teacher shows vocabulary cards 1 at a time and reads the example sentence. Then teacher asks for students to give guesses of word meaning based on evidence from context clues. Teacher goes over actual definition and explains how to pick out the definition based on context clues.
Teacher does Reading 1 as a shared reading with the class (read it aloud while students follow along). Be sure to point out vocabulary, text type (i.e. fiction, nonfiction, etc.), focus on the essential question, and follow teacher helps as you go.
Students work in their table groups to create a graphic organizer for the story they just read.

Students pick ONE of the stories from the week and use the graphic organizer to write a summary. They may choose to do it as a paragraph or a comic
Paragraphs should have:
- Topic sentence
- At least 3 detail sentences
- Closing sentence
If students choose to do a comic, each picture frame must have a caption. In essence they are taking what would have been a paragraph and splitting it up so that each sentence from the paragraph is a caption for their pictures. The picture frame captions should be:
- Topic sentence
- At least 3 detail sentences
- Closing sentence

Students choose from two assessment texts. For their chosen text, they need to:

Read the first two paragraphs and write ONE question and ONE prediction about the paragraph.
Create a graphic organizer outlining important details in the text.
Use the graphic organizer to write a summary
- Each summary should have a topic sentence, closing sentence, and AT LEAST 3 supporting details.
Write the most important message or what the author wanted us to learn for that passage.
- Back up argument with evidence
Make a connection to the story in some way. Options include
- Text to text connections
  - Does this story remind you of another story? Why/How? Be specific.
- Text to self connections
  - How to you relate to the character/story? Be specific
- Make an inference
  - Is there something not written specifically in the text that you were able to pick up from context?
