The base is where you will live, eat, and play during your time on the program! It is communal living at its finest. Some call it rustic, others call it home. The base is usually co-ed bunk-style dorm rooms with assorted common areas for eating and relaxing.
We are moving a base! This affects everyone arriving from June 3rd, 2024!
More detailed information is posted in the Directions to the base document that you received along with your invitation. The house layout will be very similar to the current base but more updated photos will be posted once the move is completed.
Location: The base is a house located in Uzhhorod, Ukraine. It is about 5 kilometers from the Slovakian border.
Sleeping Arrangements: We offer volunteers bunk beds in coed, dormitory-style rooms.
Bedding is provided, this includes a mattress, sheet, pillow, and blanket.
Kitchen facilities: The kitchen at our base will be equipped with basic cooking equipment such as pots, frying pans, basic utensils, cutlery, plates, cups, glasses etc. It will be available for you to use in the morning so that you can prepare your breakfast. You can also use it on your days off and in the evening if you wish to prepare your own dinner instead of the one provided.
We will have a designated storage space where you can keep your food, but we ask that all food is stored in sealed containers. We highly recommend bringing a sharpie/marker to mark your items. Our team is currently working to secure more refrigerator/ freezer space at the base for public use, but please note that this space will be very limited for storage so try to plan snacks accordingly.

Communal space - We have a dedicated common space at the base ( living room and backyard ), where you will be able to spend time with other volunteers, attend daily meetings, eat your meals, and participate in events. Feel free to bring along some board games, footballs, volleyballs, or any other kind of entertainment. We encourage you to consider bringing indoor activities for those times when we need to keep inside.
Please note that during the winter months, our indoor communal space could sometimes feel a little crowded due to the limited space.

Laundry: There is a washer available on base to use for a fee of 100 UAH
Note: All volunteers will be assigned a day to stay on base to help with upkeep and cooking on a rotating basis.
Unfortunately, we can not provide Wi-Fi for volunteers on our base. Volunteers should expect to purchase a local SIM card and data plan (~200 UAH). The recommended SIM card within the country is Kyivstar. SIM cards can be bought at many places: grocery stores, convenience stores, petrol stations, or the stores of the network operators.
Please make sure your phone is unlocked. Otherwise, the local SIM card will not work on your phone.
Staff can provide a laptop or phone if you need to contact a family member. If you regularly need a computer or phone for personal use we recommend bringing your own.
For Ukraine, there are two associated plug types, types C and F. Ukraine operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.
We provide three meals a day, six days per week (working days).
Breakfast: Oats, Jam, Bread, Eggs, Tea and Coffee
Lunch: Packed sandwiches
Dinner: Every volunteer will be expected to help prepare dinner for the group on a rotating basis
There will be no meal provided on your day off, so staff and volunteers need to budget accordingly to prepare their own meals, or pay local shops for meals.
Vegetarian diets can be accommodated but vegans and those with specific dietary requirements will need to supplement what we can provide with items they bring or source and purchase themselves. You will be able to store personal food items on the shelves but there may not be any refrigerated personal space.
