Shopping is best done at home, so please come prepared. With that being said, there are major chain stores on the island like Walmart and Target if you forget any items.
Please pack light - think about what is needed vs wanted; space on base is tight, and the environmental impact of items left behind after programs is a serious issue, especially on a remote island like Maui.
There is no storage space outside of your tent, so please consider this when deciding what to bring. We do not have luggage storage available.
Be prepared for any clothing you wear on the work site to get ruined and dirty. Proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is a requirement for volunteers. All Hands and Hearts provides t-shirts to wear on sites each day, as well as all PPE, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it. Some of the work we are currently doing in Hawaii does require helmets, gloves, ear protection, and protective eyewear. Please see the following lists for required and recommended items:
Closed toed shoes - mandatory when working on site. Sturdy, puncture-proof soles and steel-toe boots are recommended. Sturdy hiking boots are acceptable, but not preferred. In order to use the jackhammer and stump grinder, construction boots are mandatory.
It is strongly suggested that you bring your own personal tent (no larger than a 3-person tent, waterproof.) Please check with the Volunteer Relations Coordinator if you would like to sleep in our large communal tent. There is limited space in these tents are they are first come, first served. We may have extra personal tents available but this is not guaranteed.
