Shopping is best done at home, so please come prepared.
Be prepared for any clothing you wear on the work site to get ruined and dirty. Proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is a requirement for volunteers. Please see the following lists for required and recommended items:
All international travelers will need a passport to enter Nepal
A negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of your arrival
Vaccination Documentation (a photo is acceptable)
Work Boots: These should be sturdy work boots or hiking boots, they must be closed-toe. Puncture-proof soles and steel toe boots are recommended (no Converse or running shoes allowed on site)
Photo ID
Bedding: camping pad/air mattress, sheets & blankets or sleeping bag and pillows (Nepali style bedding can be purchased at the local market if desired. There may be some mattresses left by previous volunteers, so check in with our VRC, Mederic, before your arrival)
Work clothes. We provide short sleeved work shirts but you should bring pants/shorts to work in
Long Sleeves-- these are needed for cement pour days
Normal clothes (for after work and days off)
Please note that Nepal is a conservative country and clothing covering knees and shoulders should be worn while serving on program.
Sunscreen (more than one bottle for extended stays; it can be bought in Hetauda or Sindhuli or Kathmandu, as it may not be available in the local market)
Personal cash and ATM/credit card (cash can only be withdrawn in Kathmandu, Hetauda or Sindhuli)
Personal items, toiletries, towel
Lightweight jacket or sweater
Waterproof rain jacket
Mosquito Net (for warmer months such as April and May)
Shower shoes/flip flops
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (such as: safety glasses, 3M P-100 respirators with pancake filters, ear protection, and gloves.) We will provide this equipment, but we encourage volunteers to bring their own when possible.
Headtorch (there are often power outages)
Unlocked cell phone
Battery pack
Water bottle
Lots of socks (these tend to disappear in a communal living environment)
Personal first aid kit, including any medication e.g. paracetamol, oral rehydration salts, anti- diarrheals, etc. (We are unable to provide any medication)
Sharpie (for marking your belongings)
Vitamins, electrolytes, food supplements, comfort food
Earplugs and sleep mask
Sun hat
Sunglasses
Anything else to make your bunk bed homie (lights, pictures, decorations, pillows)
