Enhancing All Learning with Authentic Communication (Primary and Elementary) Virtual

Dr. Jeff Zwiers and this presentation highlight the value and power of encouraging and helping students communicate during all learning tasks, with an emphasis on supporting their development of language, social skills, and academic agency. Participants will engage in activities and analyze videos that show examples of communication-rich tasks and ways to enhance all of the literacy and oral language activities that we use to help students grow.

Las Voces de SEL, Let Their Stories Be Heard (Primary and Elementary) Face to Face

Our students come from many different backgrounds. Many struggle to fit into their new environment, carrying baggage from their previous experiences. How can we welcome them into our classrooms and help them feel comfortable in their new home? This session will provide you with ideas and activities that can be incorporated into your SEL instruction to allow all voices to be heard based on a bilingual literacies framework.

Deeper Dive of Cross Linguistic Connections: Part 1 (Primary and Elementary) Face to Face

The purpose of this workshop is to discuss instructional strategies and activities to perform a contrastive analysis of the elements of English and Spanish, specifically on anchor charts, word walls, and cognates.

Vocabulary Now: Part 1 (Primary and Elementary) Face to Face

Educators will explore different vocabulary strategies/activities that will build and stimulate word recognition, ideas, problem solving, writing, and metacognition. These activities/strategies will give students many opportunities to explore vocabulary that they are learning within the classroom setting. This presentation will encourage educators to help students build a firm foundation in the building blocks of language.

EB Friendly Environment: Anchors that Teach, Reinforce, and Support (Primary and Elementary) Face to Face

Get ready to begin the school year with high expectations and stronger anchor charts! We will learn different ways to make anchor charts that will explicitly support your students. We will also work on our anchors for the beginning of the year as we put into practice our new knowledge reinforcing our curriculum!

The Art of Comprehension (Primary and Elementary) Virtual

In this session Trevor will introduce The Art of Comprehension which is a student-friendly approach to teaching comprehension skills rooted in the viewing of visual texts (pictures). Since the approach can be used with pictures, non-readers, pre-readers and striving readers can all meaningfully engage with the forms of thinking needed for academic success. Trevor will also share how the comprehension and meaning-making skills developed through viewing and discussing pictures can then be transferred to various forms of written texts, both read and written. The Art of Comprehension not only helps students to gain the academic skills they need, it highlights the value of having rich, in-depth conversations around works of art.


Raíces Comunes del Español del Inglés (Bilingual Primary and Elementary) Virtual

Uno de nuestros objetivos como educadores de niños bilingües es promover el desarrollo de la capacidad analítica de nuestros estudiantes al aprender comparando el español y el inglés. Durante este taller práctico repasaremos la historia del el español y el inglés y cuáles son sus elementos comunes. Además, utilizaremos estrategias que nos permitirán poner en practica conceptos de lingüística aplicada (competencia metalingüística).

Spanish & English and their roots in common

One of our goals as educators of bilingual children is to promote the development of our students' analytical skills when learning by comparing Spanish and English. During this practical workshop, we will review the history of Spanish and English and what their common elements are. In addition, we will use strategies that will allow us to put into practice applied linguistics concepts (metalinguistic competence).

In this session teachers will use the Ellevation strategy Preview-View-Review to support Emergent Bilinguals comprehension of content using cross-linguistic connections. Teachers will observe a model lesson done with CKLA materials, internalize a sample lesson and share with other participants how they will implement the Ellevation strategy PVR.

Analyzing Emergent Bilinguals' Writing Through Bilingual Lens to Use as an Instructional Tool (Elementary) Virtual

The objective for this session is for teachers to learn how to analyze emergent bilinguals' writing through a holistic perspective that places Spanish and English side by side. Educators will also learn how to use biliteracy data to teach to students' potential within the scaffolded biliteracy zones to support emerging bilinguals' trajectories toward biliteracy.
