The Observatory is participating in a special project around Cochabamba. That project aims to identify the location and explanation for the local eartquakes. The project is the first one of its kind in Bolivia and is here to protect the population. Cochabamba is one of the most active part of the country and could have a very devastating event. The problem is that there is no certainty around the where and the when it would happen. We have seen the activity of the Cochabamba fault line due to the subduction and the superficial sismicity due to the accumulation of stress in the normal faults.
All the stations in Cochabamba have gardians. Some of them have animals and it makes it much better. We get to hang out with dogs, goats, llamas and much more. Just make sure you don't let them eat your lunch.
The tumbos, maracuyas, mangos, oranges are growing right next to the stations. The season is on for all those delicious fruits and it makes me the happiest. You get to work and eat your favorite snack. What's better than that?
A form of remuneration for the gardians of the station is 50kg of rice, 50kg of sugar and 5L of oil so they can have some compensation for the station on their land. It was pretty funny to travel around the city and villages with all that food.
Cochabamba is at a lower altitude (2800m) and you can feel it. It is warmer and sunnier which makes you feel like your in holidays. Going around the city is very nice as you can have old buildings with nice parks and fountains.
The Cochabamba stations are very specific to the area. They have high security to avoid robbery. It has an alarm system sensitive to movement. Inside, the system has a raspberry Pi to connect to the lab and send the data. It also has a USB backup for in case the connection gets cut. Although it needs to be checked in less than three months.
