The Learning Commons (LC) is open for students to check out materials from 8:10 am to 4:25 pm. For students visiting the Learning Commons after school, they must sign in with the Teacher Librarian or learning commons staff and must remain in the LC until 4:25. The LC closes for students at 2:35 pm on Tuesdays and all students are expected to present their Student ID cards to sign out books. If the card is lost, borrowing privileges will be suspended until the student initiates the replacement process.
Students may check out up to five (5) items at a time from the Learning Commons including:
Books checked out for up to two weeks, but must be renewed if needed for a longer period (if books are on a reserve list they cannot be renewed)
Circulating magazines (not current issue) for one week
Reference materials may be checked out on an overnight basis and must be returned before school the next morning
Reserved books with teacher permission
Overdue books may be renewed with the permission of the Learning Commons staff. Books may be renewed without the book being present unless it is overdue for two weeks or more. In that case, the book must be with the student to be renewed. Notices regarding overdue materials will be given to students via their school email account. Check out privileges will be temporarily denied to students who have overdue materials. Students with overdue books at the end of Semester One or Two will have their PowerSchool access blocked until library materials are returned.
If a book or another material is lost, it must be paid for by the person who checked it out. The price charged is the cost of the book plus 20% for shipping charges. Access to PowerSchool will be withheld from a student who has overdue books or unpaid charges.
Students are permitted to print a maximum of 3 pages in black and white without cost. Color printing is available on one designated computer at a cost of 2 SAR per page. There is also a photocopier available for student use, at a cost of 1 SAR per page. Out of respect for the environment, students are advised to print and copy only what is necessary.
The purpose and intent of a Learning Commons is to allow students to feel comfortable in gaining access to information in many forms. Whether it is through the use of books, magazines, newspapers or the Internet, students can use these tools to accomplish many tasks. It is the goal of the AIS-R Learning Commons that all students are able to access, find and utilize the information they need.
Students in grades 6–12 use the MS/HS Learning Commons and its facilities flexibly so that they may utilize the resources when it is convenient for them. The Teacher Librarian also directs learning cooperatively with the teachers of all grade levels to team teach important research skills, as well as help students develop into strong users of information.
Textbooks are available for reference in the respective teacher’s classroom and some copies of these textbooks are available for a 5-day on reserve checkout in the MS/HS Learning Commons (See AIS-R Learning Commons Textbook Reserve Practices and Procedures). All students are responsible for all novels and textbooks checked-out in their name.
The Learning Commons is a special area of the school reserved as a place for all students to use. In order to maintain this area as a calm and peaceful location for study, review, resource use and research, not more than 35 students total are allowed in the Learning Commons unless special permission is granted by the HS Office, Teacher Librarian, LC Staff or a classroom Teacher.
