Activities

At AIS-R we believe that extracurricular activities are an integral part of the school setting. Afterschool activities provide students with opportunities to explore new areas of interest, build skills, assume leadership roles, and establish meaningful connections with other students. Participation in these activities also promotes the development of core values such as responsibility, honesty, perseverance, and team learning. We are committed to offering a wide variety of activities designed to broaden the experiences and education of those students who choose to participate.

Athletics Philosophy

At AIS-R we believe that athletics is an integral part of the school setting. We are committed to offering team sports designed to broaden the experiences and education of those students who participate. Our primary objectives with our student-athletes are to develop the skills required by specific sports and the skills that will help them be successful in their adult lives. AIS-R believes that student-athletes have an additional responsibility as ambassadors of the school and expects them to adhere to a personal code of conduct consistent with the values of sportsmanship, scholarship, integrity, and commitment to oneself and their team.

Clubs

AIS-R offers many opportunities to be part of a team, club or other student organization. All students, grades 9-12, are expected to take an active part in at least one club with an action-service component connected to that club. Information regarding athletics, arts, and activities will be presented to students throughout the year. Participation in clubs and activities is a component of student life (see above).

Week Without Walls (WWW)

AIS-R’s Week Without Walls (WWW) program is designed to provide unique educational experiences during which students see their power to make a difference and the importance of doing so in the lives of others. This goal serves AIS-R’s mission of educating and inspiring responsible and ethical global citizens.

All seniors who take DP exams in May participate in Mock Exams during Week Without Walls. The Mock Exams are actual DP exams taken from previous diploma sessions and simulate the format, time constraints, and atmosphere that students can expect during their real exams. The Mock Exams serve as the second semester final exams for seniors.

**Note: Transfer grade 12 students who will not take DP exams in May are required to participate in an internship during WWWs.

Student Council

The members of our High School Student Council are elected each year. They represent the students in many school matters, sponsor activities and organize and lead High School assemblies. They are required to remain in good academic standing by maintaining the minimum grade point average and grades as stated on their application. Please refer to the Student Council Advisor(s) for these specific requirements. They must also maintain the highest standards of Eagle Behavior by adhering to all aspects of the Profile of an EAGLE Learner. Students who have been suspended, or have ongoing behavioral issues, or have not demonstrated Academic Integrity will not be eligible to stand for office and will be removed from office if they are suspended or found to have committed acts that violate academic integrity while holding office. The organization of the Student Council consists of both an Executive Student Council and Grade-level Student Council Representatives, for a combined total of 10 Student Council Members. The Executive Student Council is made-up of four, Grade 12 students (3 who are Student Council Representatives and 1 who is the Executive Student Council President- all elected in May of their Grade 11 year), and Grade-level representatives for Grades 9, 10 and 11 (all grade levels from grades 9 to 11 have 1 President and 1 Vice President- all elected in September of the current school year).

National Honor Society

The National Honor Society at AIS-R seeks members who embody the organization’s core attributes of scholarship, character, leadership and service. The selection process of new NHS members is conducted in a manner that will help ensure that the National Honor Society continues to be a club whose members are role models both at school and beyond. To ensure members meet the scholarship criteria, only students who have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher, from the beginning of enrollment at AIS-R, are eligible for application. Once students meet this requirement, they will submit their ePortfolio and personal statement as evidence in support of leadership, scholarship, service and character. Upon receiving applications, the selection committee, comprised of five teachers, will review evidence presented in the ePortfolio and personal statement. Students who have been suspended, or with ongoing behavioral issues, or have not demonstrated Academic Integrity will not be eligible to apply for NHS and will have their places rescinded if they are suspended or found to have committed acts that violate academic integrity while holding office.

Interscholastic Athletics/Extracurricular Activities

AIS-R has an extensive interscholastic program for all students. Teams have the opportunity to compete in three different conferences. Locally, we compete against other Riyadh schools in the International Schools Sports League-Riyadh (ISSL-R). Nationally, we compete against teams from across the Kingdom as a member of the Saudi Arabian Intra-Kingdom Activities Conference (SAIKAC). Internationally, we compete against teams from various countries within the Gulf Region at invitational tournaments.  Students trying out for teams or extracurricular activities are subject to age, and academic and behavior eligibility requirements.

High School Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities

At AIS-R we pride ourselves in our extracurricular program and the range of experiences we offer our students. As a college preparatory school with high measurable standards dedicated to learning and academic success we place academic learning at the heart of our mission and thus only students who meet our academic eligibility requirements may audition, try out for or participate in any activity. These include, but are not limited to all Varsity and JV sports, SAIKAC band and music festivals, Model United Nations conferences, NHS Talent show and/or drama productions of any kind. If attending an activity - such as ISTA Festivals - is part of the curriculum, then eligibility rules do not apply.

Student Travel

AIS-R provides many opportunities for student travel which include but are not limited to sporting events, MUN, Week Without Walls, etc. Every student is expected to travel with the AIS-R group and AIS-R teacher supervisors. At times, a student may need to join the group at a later date/time and travel separate from the group. This is only permitted when the child is supervised by a parent. AIS-R must approve this travel and a parent signature is required. The school will not be held responsible for any travel delays, issues and/or concerns when a student travels separate from the group as requested and approved by the parent.

Academic Eligibility for all Extracurricular Activities

Students may not audition, tryout or participate in extracurricular activities during any semester they have been placed on academic probation.

Extracurricular Activities and Grades

Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or above and cannot allow any grade in any course to fall to a 2, in order to fully participate in organized sports, MUN or a performance arts production. If a student does not maintain their grades, they cannot try out or audition for extracurricular activities. This is linked to ASL and Learning Support expectations. If a student’s grades are not maintained during the rehearsal or practice process at progress report time they may not continue until the grades have improved. Students and parents will read the Athletics and Activities pack and sign to indicate that that they have understood and accepted the terms and conditions once they are selected for an extracurricular activity.

Students who are involved in any extracurricular activity are responsible for ensuring that they are not assigned to Learning Support, detention or ASL. If so assigned, their attendance at Learning Completion, detention or ASL must come before any other commitment. Frequent attendance at Learning Completion, detention or ASL will also result in their departure from the extracurricular activity, at the discretion of the sponsor/advisor.

Prom

Prom is for AIS-R High School students only. Students must be in Grades 11 or 12, or in Grade 10 with an invitation from a Grade 11 or Grade 12 student, to attend or be invited as guests. School gates open for Prom at a time designated by the Prom Committee. The outer school gate will close 1 hour and 45min after gates are open for the start of prom, and no students arriving after that time will be allowed in, no matter what the reason for their tardiness. One hour and 45 minutes is enough time to negotiate Riyadh traffic, check points, etc. Late students not able to enter the outer gate after the gates are closed will not be permitted, under any circumstances, to enter satellite parking, including at the 3 hour mark of Prom (closing time) when drivers begin to arrive to pick up students. WWW Participation (Grade 6-12)

Our Week Without Walls experiences enhance our curricular program with exploratory, contextualized situations that may include world travel and action service. It is the expectation that all students demonstrate all attributes of the Profile of an EAGLE Learner and therefore, should a student be placed conditionally or have a behavior contract, their participation in WWWs is at the discretion of the divisional Principal in consultation with the Superintendent and may not be offered a “seat” on a WWW trip.

WWWs also serves the International Baccalaureate Organization’s mission to encourage students “to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.” Driven by these missions AIS-R requires all High School students to participate in WWWs.  Students who do not participate in WWWs cannot graduate from AIS-R. Our WWWs experiences enhance our curricular program with exploratory, contextualized situations that may include world travel and action service. It is the expectation that all students demonstrate all attributes of the AIS-R Profile of an EAGLE Learner and therefore, should a student be placed conditionally or have a behavior contract, their participation in WWWs is at the discretion of the divisional Principal in consultation with the Superintendent and may not be offered a “seat” on a WWW trip.

Participation in WWWs is a graduation requirement as it is part of AIS-R’s High School student life (see above). WWWs provides unique educational experiences at each grade level.
