The multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) in the High School are systems of support designed to provide appropriate interventions for students both socially-emotionally and academically. The interventions built into the MTSS include Tier 1 support within the classroom setting and school environment; Tier 2 support outside of classes and with specific teachers including on breaks and after school, and during Advisory with Grade-level Leaders; and Tier 3 support directly involving the Counseling and HS administration. As a Professional Learning Community (PLC) school, we are committed to using data to support student interventions and provide opportunities for differentiated learning for the Whole Learner with references to both Transdisciplinary and Disciplinary Transfer Goals. When a student is being challenged or requires more challenge, either socially-emotionally or academically, specific interventions will be enacted to further support students by meeting them where they are and continuing forward with a growth mindset.
Social-Emotional Learning Support: Attendance, Academic Integrity, Behavior
If all other interventions have proved unsuccessful, then AIS-R offers one final form of intervention, the convening of the Student Success Team.
Students who receive grades of a "1, 2 or 3" in core subjects and/or electives, or have an overall GPA of below 1.0 despite attending After-School Learning and receiving all other possible forms of support from their teacher and counselor and the High School Leadership Team, become clients of the SST or Student Success Team.
In this case, the teacher and respective Grade Level AP will initiate the SST process by contacting the student’s teachers in order to create an Action Plan for Success. Teachers will share their Action Plan templates with the Counseling Center. The teacher, student, counselor and parents will meet during or before Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTC) to discuss the Action Plan for Success. If a meeting is unable to be arranged during the PTC, the Counseling Center will arrange for an alternative meeting. The counselor will facilitate the meeting and be responsible for emailing a copy of the Action Plan to all those at the meeting as well as following up with teachers the progress of the Action Plan. If the Action Plan is not successful, then a further meeting will be called, which will also include the parents.
If a DP candidate fails to achieve at the expected level despite interventions, then the DP Coordinator will initiate interventions appropriate to MTSS support.
Academic MTSS Support: See HS Assessment Structure for Types of Assessment & Levels of Achievement
Regular, low-grade reports are run by the HS Office to identify students who are performing at a 3 or lower in any class or classes so that students can know of their status and be supported in a timely manner to begin improving before it is too late. Students will be asked to the HS Office and/or Core Subject Support teachers during Advisory to discuss these grades and ways to receive additional support.
Although After School Learning (ASL) is available for all students, mandatory ASL is for students consistently earning a 3 or lower in a particular course. ASL is available for 40-50 minutes after school in teachers’ classrooms on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. Students are assigned to a particular teacher for ASL in that teacher’s classroom, whether for core subject or elective course support
Parents and students are notified of the start and finish date of the ASL program, including the day of the week and the teacher who they are assigned. All students must attend their ASL classes if assigned as mandatory ASL due to concerns within subject Levels of Achievement
Attendance for ASL is taken through the ASL Attendance Form and is monitored by classroom teachers, ASL teachers and the HS office.
ASL runs from right after school until 4:30pm
Additional MTSS Academic Support is held in the Counseling Classroom with the Student Support Coordinator for any student with assignments or assessments that are incomplete, need to be made up, or require additional time. This operates on Sunday through Thursday mornings (ER Days excluded) during Flextime.
MTSS Academic Support in ASL is in assigned teacher's classrooms and is monitored by the ASL teacher and the HS Office
Students are referred for MTSS Academic Support by Teachers and the HS Office
Failure to attend mandatory ASL will result in students and parents being contacted by the HS Office.
If all other interventions have proved unsuccessful, then AIS-R offers one final form of intervention, the convening of the Student Success Team.
Students who earn grades of a "1, 2 or 3" in core subjects and/or electives, or have an overall GPA of below 2.0 despite attending After School Learning and receiving all other possible forms of MTSS Academic support from their Teacher, Counselor and the High School Leadership Team, will now receive SST support.
In this case, the Teacher, Counselor, HS Leadership Team and Learning Support Teacher will initiate the SST process by contacting the student’s teachers in order to create an Action Plan for Success. The HS Learning Support Teacher will share Action Plans with the Counseling Center. The subject teacher, student, counselor, learning support teacher and parents will meet during or before Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTC) to discuss the Action Plan for Success. If a meeting is unable to be arranged during the PTC, the Counseling Center will arrange for an alternative meeting. The counselor will facilitate the meeting and be responsible for emailing a copy of the Action Plan to all those at the meeting as well as following up with teachers on the progress of the Action Plan. If the Action Plan is not successful, then a further meeting will be called, which will also include the parents.
If a DP candidate fails to achieve at the expected level despite interventions, then the DP Coordinator will initiate interventions appropriate to Learning Support and the student will be considered for DP Certificate or American Diploma status.
Academic and personal counseling and advisory services are available to all students. Appropriate referrals will be made to qualified family counselors or other professionals when deemed necessary.
Career and college counseling is provided to high school students. This will include tips for college searches, the application process, writing college essays, meeting university requirements and much more.
The DP Coordinator, Mr. Crook (jcrook@aisr.org), can provide a handbook that includes extensive details about the IB Programme around the world as well as the DP Programme offered at AIS-R.
