UNIT 1 — STREET ART
For Unit 1 students were introduced to the art of British street artist Banksy. Students looked around Hong Kong for examples of street art in their own communities and explored the difference between vandalism and art. The students were taught about health and safety and how to use spray paints correctly and use the techniques appropriately. as part of the unit requirements students needed to find areas in and around the school that could have artwork added to enhance the spaces . Once students had identified a space they created their own stencils and made an artwork that would be suitable for the spaces they had identified.
Unit Two: The Art of Persuasion (Art and English Collaboration)
The Art Foundation and English students teamed up to create a collaborative unit called the art of persusasion. In english class students created presentations which were then pitched to the art students. the presentations focused on different products such as the bamboo toothbrush, a hematite ring, umbrellas and erasers. the art students selected one of the products and created a artwork to advertise them. As the art students were exploring collage and mixed media and exloporing famous pop artists such as eduardo paolozzi and robert rauchenburg their artworks used different found materials and papers. Throughout the unit the english and art students communicated their ideas to each other and made the neccesary changes and adjustments to create some exciting final pieces.
Unit Three: Cubist Still Life
For Unit 3 the Art Foundation students explored Cubism and the life and work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. The students set up their own still life compositions and used items such as old instruments, wooden manniquins, baskets, flowers and other items. They then created a composition on canvas board exploring the still life set up in various angles and finished their artworks by using acrylic paint, posca pens, pastels and different patterned papers. The final artworks were colourful, exciting and unique.
Unit Four: The Art of Drawing (Online Learning)
In February we made the transition to online learning and for the 10 weeks students learnt how to improve their drawing skills. Students learnt about different aspects of line, markmaking, value and proportions of the face. At the start of the unit the students were asked to draw themselves as best as they could and at the end of the unit they did the same again, but on the 2nd drawing they included all of the skills and techniques they were taught. This resulted in a presentation where the students showed their 1st and final drawings where there was a visable improvement.
For their final artworks students were encouraged to show all of the skills they had been taught throughout the unit. Students demonstrated mark making techniques, applying value using a range of pencils and using grids to help with accuracy. At the end of the unit they presented their first artworks next to their final ones so we could see the improvement.
Unit 5: Paint Like Basquiat
In hong kong during april and may in the opera house gallery there was a art exhibition titled basquiat, haring, scharf. In unit 5 we explored the life and art of artist jean michel basquiat where students learnt about color theory and schemes, using mixed media to create layers and using symbols and text in work. Students chose their colour schemes and mixed the colours using a limited pallete to create the first layers on canvas. They then built up the layers of the artwork by adding text, symbols and the final self portrait layer with anatomy details. the final canvas pieces were then finished off with some stenciling and spray painting.
