Welcome to the first series of events after the 2025-2026 holiday break!
A combined DCS, Arma 3, Logistics, and Steel Beasts detour to the Nordic Front during the storyline of Song of The Nibelungs!
Coming 10th and 11th January of 2026!
The war is not confined to Central Europe alone. Following the NATO invasion of Germany, the Soviet Union launched an invasion of Finland, claiming that Swedish and Finnish NATO sympathies justified its right to self-defense.
After only a week of fighting, Soviet forces have advanced to the outskirts of Kemijärvi. Finnish units ceded ground in the opening phase to buy time for the arrival of Swedish assistance, which has now reached the front lines. With reinforcements in place, the true battle is about to begin. It is here that our campaign detours, on the morning of 31 May 1986.
Military intelligence obtained by NATO indicates preparations for a major Soviet offensive north of Kemijärvi along Valtatie 5, National Highway 5. Soviet aviation is at a high state of readiness, and both cruise missile strikes and bomber attacks are expected. For days, Soviet aircraft have contested the Forward Line of Troops with fighter patrols, and similar activity is anticipated across the entire northern front.
The Finnish 1st Reserve Brigade has moved beyond the town of Huhtala, intending to halt the Soviet advance south of Kallela, using Lakes Sorsa and Yli as natural chokepoints. Reserve rifle brigades, supported by a limited number of BMPs, have been reinforced by Swedish reservists to plug gaps and replace losses. It is far from a fair fight, but this is not the first time Soviet forces have attempted to push through the narrow roads of northern Finland.
The Norwegian Air Force has deployed a squadron of F-104s from 331 Squadron in both fighter and strike roles, while Sweden’s 211 Squadron has similarly forward-deployed its Viggens. The Finnish Air Force contributes No. 11 Squadron with its MiG-21s. The Royal Air Force has also committed a small detachment of Phantom FGR.2s, equipped with Skyflash missiles, providing the primary beyond-visual-range capability available. Even so, the Nordic nations are ill-prepared to face the more numerous and technologically advanced Soviet air forces.
The times ahead will be harsh under the North Star. It is not the first time.
And it will not be the last.
Ok so organization wise, what can you expect?
There will be one DCS gameday, one Arma 3 gameday, one Steel Beasts-event, and some supporting logistics activities, all focused on that weekend of 10th and 11th January 2026.
For DCS:
-On the Kola Peninsula DCS terrain. It is on sale during Winter Sale, and we will play it once. However, it is a great map, and Air Goons Wargames will return to it eventually as well.
-F-104 mod
-Viggen
-MiG-21
-F-4 Phantom
Most flights will use Rovaniemi Air Force bases, with some assets taking off from various roadbases nearby, such as Hosio and depending on if Vuojärvi is assessed as safe enough.
Rovaniemi will be under a 10nm Base Defence Zone, with some SA-11 batteries protecting it, but reality is that most of the land has no Air Defence due to vast distances involved.
Expect to execute some sort of standard departure out of Rovaniemi, along with a low altitude arrival due to congested airspace.
For Arma 3:
-Finnish reservists
-Valtatie 5-map
-Modpack will be updated
-Rautaa rajalle
You can expect a reinforced Finnish company with some BMP-attachments to support them in a defensive operation along the highway, with combat engineer and mining assets available. It will be the standard 3-hour game with 2 hours of game and the one hour prep time allocated to those who wish to dig and mine beforehand, but that is not mandatory.
For Steel Beasts:
-T-72s. For everyone. Finland and Soviet union.
-T-55s. For eeveryone. Lol, see above.
-BMPs. Sigh. See above.
It'll be a defensive action for bluefor, attempting to stop soviet advances along Valtatie 5. More to follow.
