War is going on.
This will be the next Wargame project from Air Goons. Focusing on central and northern Germany in 1986, the war becomes decidedly not Cold. An exercise conducted by NATO causes suspicion among Warsaw Pact leaders, which in turn makes NATO decision makers believe they need to initiate their war plans. A series of confusions leads to NATO forces attacking at Fulda Gap, and the war begins.
Premise
Much like the prior campaigns, The Long Afternoon War and Under the North Star, The Song of the Nibelungs aims to be a multi-game, layered, and player-driven wargame with operational level planning for an Army Group sized area, various components, and battlefield domains supported by several games, primarily DCS:World, Arma 3, ETS2, MSFS2024/2020/X-Plane, Sea Power, and a tabletop hex game called Red Strike 1989.
While DCS is at the forefront, both visually and participation wise, the main form of affecting the war will be the Operational Level boardgame and its commanders, driving battles and events portrayed in games like DCS and Arma.
The enemy
Pitting Warsaw Pact states to face off against our players, these forces will be led by various Game Masters, and in addition, will have a small player-led component as an East German Fighter Wing, allowing some number of fighters and ground attackers to fly against NATO. They will be subject to same airframe limitations and expenditures, and will be required to operate on a realistic doctrine and intent to preserve their own lives and aircraft, rather than arbitrarily attempting to pad their kill stats. Below is a front page example of the SOP the group of players will have to abide by.
