Artist Statement (click to read)

Photography has helped me see the world in an entirely new light. I can express my emotions regarding specific scenarios through photography in ways words cannot. My work has helped me notice minor details in the world around me, such as slight alterations in my friends’ body language or a change in scenery or lighting. From a personal perspective, I try to concentrate on the relationships and personalities of those around me. I primarily shoot candid portraits showing the raw nature of my friends and family. I bring my camera everywhere I go because I know that there is beauty in everything. I have been able to express myself fully through photography, both as an artist and as a person.

The subject in the image, “Rosie,” is my grandmother, curling her hair for the first time after months in and out of the hospital. After she passed away, I frequently looked at this picture to remember her. The pink details evoked memories of her softness and kindness, two integral parts of her personality. It was then that I recognized the true power of that color. For weeks after this epiphany, I noticed similarities throughout my day-to-day life, reflected in my photography.

It is the focus of my portfolio to emphasize the fact that color has the power to transform our lives. A different color is featured in each picture: yellow, pink, green, blue, and purple. While this theme may appear mundane on the surface, it encompasses a deeper meaning than just color. Each image depicts a vignette of life, mirroring the mood evoked by each color. In the final image, a variety of colors are evident, illustrating the significance of education and the power of knowledge.
