Team Paglaom Delusom is back in Mahayag. It started with participating in the flag ceremony, and afterward attended a session of the Sangguniang Bayan to present our plan of activities for the upcoming exposure. Together with us are Alegre San Vicente and Usbong Upper Salug.
COURTESY CALL ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL AND DOCTORS TO THE BARRIOS
Team Paglaom Delusom has a courtesy call with the Principal of Delusom Elementary School, Ma'am Mary Jane Lapinig together with SK Chairperson, Cybert Gandamon, and discussed the plan of activities for our implementation phase. Through health education of proper hand washing, dental care and proper garbage disposal. The school also would like for the medical students to discuss mental health care and effects of illegal drugs for Grade 4-6.
The team also met with with Doc Arnaldo Garcia, who is assigned in Mahayag Municipal Rural Health Unit and discussed and shared our plans for the implementation and his contribution to our implementation phase.
HEALTH EDUCATION CAMPAIGN BY PUROK
During scheduled Purok meetings, the team held health teachings per Purok from Purok 1 to Purok 7 in line with the identified problems of Hypertension, safe water, and proper waste disposal. Before the lectures were given and the posters put up, the team gave pre-test questions to identify any gap in their knowledge. After the lectures were given and with the help of visual aids from the posters, the team gave post-test questions to identify if the lectures given were understood. Feedback from the community people were encouraged to help improve our lectures.
DEWORMING
Deworming Day at Delusom Elementary School
July 2, 2025 – Delusom Elementary School, Zamboanga City
In a collective effort to promote the health and well-being of school-aged children, a successful deworming activity was held at Delusom Elementary School on July 2, 2025. Spearheaded by the dedicated team of Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), midwives, and community health professionals, the event aimed to address one of the most common but often overlooked health concerns in children—soil-transmitted helminth infections.
The event was led by Ma’am Mislie A. Caliskis, Jeanifer D. Romagos, and Nurse Andel Jay, whose coordinated efforts ensured smooth implementation of the deworming process. Together with the BHWs, the team provided age-appropriate doses of deworming medication to the pupils, ensuring every child received the correct treatment under proper medical supervision.
The activity was not only focused on administering the medication but also included a short health education session. The children were taught about the importance of handwashing, proper hygiene, and the need to wear footwear to prevent parasitic infections. These simple but impactful messages aimed to reinforce sustainable hygiene habits that will protect children beyond the event itself.
With the enthusiastic participation of the school staff and support from local health officials, the deworming activity was completed efficiently and without complications. It was a testament to what can be achieved through strong collaboration between the community, school, and health sector.
Healthy kids mean a healthier future—and today, Delusom took a big step forward.
HEALTH CARAVAN AT DELUSOM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
In a meaningful effort to promote community health and awareness, medical students from Ateneo de Zamboanga University – School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM) Level II hosted a Health Caravan at Delusion Elementary School. The event was held for the entire school community, including Kinder 1 to Grade 6 students, teachers, and parents, and featured vital discussions on hygiene, wellness, and public health.The event focused on key health topics such as proper handwashing and toothbrushing, illegal drugs awareness, solid waste management, and hypertension. Adding expertise to the program was Mr. Alvin Vale, Sanitary Inspector from Malowas, who served as the event’s guest speaker. His talk emphasized the importance of sanitation and community cooperation in maintaining public health.
The event was made possible through the close collaboration between ADZU-SOM’s medical students and Delusion Elementary School’s leadership. With the support of Ma'am Mary Jane Lapinig(Principal) and Ma'am Evelyn Capadngan (Officer In Charge), the caravan ran smoothly and reached its goal of empowering participants with valuable health knowledge.The Health Caravan not only educated but also inspired. It reminded everyone—from the youngest students to the most seasoned parents—that good health begins with simple habits and strong community support.

FEEDING PROGRAM
In line with Nutrition Month, the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Barangay Delusom, in partnership with school principal Ms. Mary Jane Lapinig and Level II medical students from Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM), held a feeding program and hygiene education activity at Delusom Elementary School. The event focused on promoting healthy habits among students, beginning with a handwashing demonstration that emphasized the importance of proper hygiene in preventing disease. It also underscored the role of good nutrition in supporting children’s physical development and learning capacity.
Following the educational portion, students were served a nutritious meal prepared by volunteers from the SK, school staff, and local community members. Though centered on health and wellness, the program also carried a personal touch, as SK Chairman Hon. Cybert Paul Gandamon, an alumnus of the school, contributed to the effort as a way of giving back. Overall, the activity served as a strong example of how community-driven initiatives can reinforce vital health practices among young learners.
PRENATAL DAY
Barangay Delusom held its regular monthly prenatal check-up at the Barangay Hall on the second Wednesday of July . Medical students from Ateneo de Zamboanga University – School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM) Level II actively participated by assisting the assigned midwife, nurse, and barangay health workers in providing basic prenatal services. They helped administer tetanus toxoid (TT) immunizations to eligible pregnant women as part of routine prenatal care. In addition, the students were involved in monitoring vital signs—including blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate as well as measuring each patient’s height and weight to assess their nutritional status and overall pregnancy health. This hands-on participation not only supported the healthcare team but also allowed the medical students to gain practical experience in providing healthcare to expectant mothers.
TREEPLANTING 🌱
In the promotion to support environmental stewardship and youth involvement, medical students from Ateneo de Zamboanga University – School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM) Level II conducted a tree planting activity at Purok 7, Barangay Delusom, Mahayag on July 11, 2025. The initiative aimed to promote sustainable practices and strengthen the bond between future healthcare professionals and the local community. The activity was carried out in collaboration with the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Barangay Delusom, whose members played a key role in the planning and execution of the event. Among those who contributed were SK Chairman Cybert Gandamon, SK Treasurer Paul Apao, SK Secretary Niecy Lumayag, and SK Kagawads Kristine May Yapana and Japhet Mutia.
This community-driven effort highlighted the importance of environmental action in public health and emphasized the value of youth leadership. The ADZU-SOM Level II students extend their gratitude to the SK officials and residents of Barangay Delusom for their warm support and commitment to creating a greener, healthier future.
HEALTH CARAVAN DAY IN BRGY DELUSOM: A DAY OF LEARNING, SERVICE AND COMMUNITY UNITY
In an inspiring display of community partnership and health advocacy, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University - School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM) medical students spearheaded a Health Caravan Day on July 15, 2025 at the Covered Court of Barangay Delusom, Mahayag. The event gathered residents, health professionals, and local leaders for a morning of education, preventive healthcare, and fun community engagement.
The caravan featured a series of insightful health lectures led by esteemed guests from Mahayag Municipality.
Dr. Arnaldo Garcia, head of the Mahayag Rural Health Unit (RHU), gave a comprehensive talk on hypertension, highlighting its silent progression, the importance of lifestyle modification, and the value of early detection.
Mr. Alvin Vale, the municipal Sanitary Inspector, delivered an engaging lecture on Safe Water Practices, emphasizing water safety, purification methods, and disease prevention.
Mr. Ponciano Solatorio, head of the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), completed the trio with a timely discussion on Solid Waste Management (SWM), calling for responsible community action towards a cleaner, greener Mahayag.
Beyond the lectures, the ADZU-SOM students provided free blood pressure (BP) monitoring, giving attendees an opportunity to learn about their cardiovascular health and ask questions in a supportive setting.
The event culminated in a raffle draw as a token of appreciation for the active participation of the community. Prizes were distributed to lucky winners, spreading smiles and joy throughout the venue.
Notable guests in attendance included the incumbent Barangay Captain, Hon. Eduard Prete, along with dedicated Barangay Delusom officials, whose presence and support underscored the strong collaboration between the community and its future healthcare professionals.
The Health Caravan Day stands as a testament to the power of health education, community participation, and intersectoral collaboration. It marks yet another meaningful step toward a healthier, more empowered Barangay Delusom.
