At the start of the month, Purok meetings are held by the Purok Leader. During each meeting, they discuss their monthly agendas and address problems within the Puroks. A variety of issues are discussed, ranging from brainstorming ways to better support bereaved families, to dealing with wandering carabaos destroying their harvests, and addressing water disruptions due to a nearby quarry. These are assessed by the Purok meetings and agreed upon by the community.
It is that time again for the monthly prenatal of expecting mothers. Prenatal visits are held every first Wednesday at the Barangay Health Center, a handful of pregnant women went to the Health Center for distribution of Calcium and Iron, blood pressure taking, weight monitoring, and some of them getting their Tetanus shots. This time our team did a short lecture on contraceptives with expecting mothers and answered questions about family planning.
Focused Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted to gather the perspectives of the residents of Barangay Delusom regarding the top issues their barangay faces, including: lack of access to safe water, high prevalence of hypertension, challenges in solid waste management, immunization status of both children and adults, issues with data recording and reporting, and the prevalence of upper respiratory tract infections.
The importance of early childhood vaccination is emphasized through the monthly immunization provided by the Barangay Health Center. The midwives Ma'am Joy and Ma'am Meslie come to Barangay Delusom every 2nd Wednesday of the month to deliver vaccinations to the children under 12 months. Vaccinations are important for the health of children who are especially vulnerable to diseases. Vaccines are necessary to strengthen the immunity of the children and prevent significant mortality and morbidity.
Solid waste management is one of our identified problems in the community. Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) is the process of gathering the solid wastes in the community and categorizing them based on biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and residuals. Planning for waste management requires a good analysis of the current situation to provide a basis for planning. The weighing of wastes helps in identifying what type does the community have more of which would eventually help in solving the waste management problem in Barangay Delusom.
The three groups assigned in the Municipality of Mahayag (Delusom, San Vicente, and Upper Salug Daku) were tasked by our community preceptor to join forces in order to plan, organize, and hold a fun run for a cause. All proceeds from the event were equally divided among the groups and will be used as contribution for future health programs in the community.
We invited the barangay officials, health workers, and some residents of Barangay Delusom to present the problems related to health found in the area and inquired about their thoughts on what is the most concerning to them. The Hanlon Prioritization Method was used as a format in doing this activity.
