Hey there everyone! We had a nice dinner (options of rice, potatoes, meatballs, and salad). The kids were hungry!!!
We had a brief orientation and the students settled into our rooms for the night. They all have their own mosquito nets. Some showered, and others said they will shower in the morning.
Our doctor has been fantastic, and he’s on top of things.
The kids are looking out for each other too. It’s sweet!
Off to do a few more rounds of this lovely quiet space. I’ll see if I have any other pics to post this evening.
Goat De-Worming
So this group had a great morning de-worming 204 goats! The kids took turns catching goats, holding them, prying their mouths open, and using a syringe to get the deworming medicine into them.
204 goats! Our kids rocked this!
They played some football with some of the local kids, one of whom showed our students how they make a football to play with.
You might think that this would tire them out…
Elephant Deterrent Fence Building
After lunch, our students received some instructions from one of the Camps International leaders, who showed our students how to use clippers to cut the tin, how to flatten the tin, and then to use a hammer and nail to gently put a hole in the tin. Later, the students helped to string the tin strips up onto the fence line.
The kids did a great job, and the property owner came out to thank our students for what they did to help protect what they have.
Of course, the kids sang all the way back and said “Jambo” to all the kids on the road on the way back.
We are all up and ready to head out for the hike. The kids were ready before time today! They’ve slept well and have eaten before heading out.
In the afternoon, we met with Mama Mercy, who leads a consortium of local women’s groups of over 500 women.
She is a very respected woman in the local community, and our students learned about how she has been working to empower so many women to help them learn new skills that build up their families, the economy, and the overall community.
Specifically, our students learned to make elephant dung paper and engaged in some beadwork.
Our kids had a pretty easy afternoon and some free time.
They all had a Swahili lesson too.
After that, we had dinner, and our students shared so many appreciations and growth points both for themselves and others too. Beautiful!
Before bed last night, we shut down the camp lights for five minutes to star gaze. The kids were identifying planets and constellations and, of course, got into playing with their flashlights!
This morning, we are off to start some project work at a local school that Camps International has been working with - brick making to expand the school, some painting, and helping to make some planting beds.
The students at this school travel 5-10 km just to get to school here. We are humbled by these kids, their joy, their spirit, and their friendship. Many of their students wrote lovely letters of friendship to our students today.
We are returning tomorrow to complete our work on the planting beds, the classroom, and brickmaking.
Good evening, everyone. We just finished dinner after a final successful day at the Marunga Primary School. Our students finished painting a classroom, constructed a wall around a flowerbed, and made bricks for future projects.
A few students helped teach a spontaneous mini-lesson to a class on climate as well.
Perhaps the most rewarding part of the day was reconnecting with our new Kenyan friends. A few more of our students received letters and drawings from their new friends.
We ended our visit with a brief goodbye ceremony, many hugs, smiles, and a few tears.
Tomorrow morning is an early wake-up in order to see the most animals on tomorrow’s safari 🐆🐘🦒🦛🦓🦏. In the afternoon, we will visit a Maasai village.
We began with a 5 AM wake-up, breakfast,t and morning safari. We saw many lions, zebras, elephants, gazelles, monkeys, baboons, buffalo, giraffes, and a few other animals for sure.
We had a picnic lunch in the park with a few baboons looking on. We then traveled to a Maasai village where we danced with the Maasai and toured their village. We even got to meet the 95-year-old female village head.
Back at camp, we had dinner, followed by a presentation of the running shoes and jersey donations to Mama Mercy’s Women’s Group, a birthday celebration, and finally, a bonfire and some roasted marshmallows.
Tomorrow, we get to sleep in, enjoy a later breakfast, and pack for our journey back to Abu Dhabi.
