MS4000 Science 6, MS4001 Science 6-ESL
The goal of the 6th-grade science course is to enable students to develop the necessary skills to carry out scientific investigations. In the Middle School science classroom, students work to answer questions about how and why things happen in the natural world through the exploration of phenomena. They observe, hypothesize, identify variables, measure, collect, evaluate and communicate their findings through lab reports and research projects.
Students will build their knowledge and understanding of biology, physics, and environmental science topics. Units of study include biology topics such as the living world, cells, and their processes, bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals; physics topics such as sound, light and waves; and, finally, environmental science topics such as biodiversity, natural resources and human impacts on the environment.
The middle school science classes are currently in the process of implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which emphasize the integration of science and engineering practices, cross-cutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas.
