Emphasis is placed on completing the fundamentals in grammar and vocabulary through reading, writing, listening and speaking. Thematically based units to be covered include: Appearance, Trends and Fashion, Science, Inventions, Technology, Professions, Geography, Earth, and Environmental Issues through SDGs. Reading assignments include short stories, as well as newspaper and magazine articles. Oral and written presentations are introduced to enhance speaking and presentation skills.
There is further immersion into Language Arts (through leveled reading and writing development), Science (through a glossary, reading, research, and writing) and Social Studies with grade level content (through a glossary and leveled readings). (This course corresponds to the A2 level of CEFR & Emerging to Developing within the WIDA Framework)
The WIDA standardized test is administered twice a year (January and May) to document the students’ growth, confirm their level, and ensure that they have mastered the linguistic competence required to be mainstreamed and succeed in academics, without support from ESL classes.
