Self-esteem is the overall assessment of your own worth, value, and contentment with who you are (Du et al., 2017; Jordan et al., 2020). It's important to discern that self-esteem differs from selfishness. While self-esteem enables you to value yourself while also considering the needs of others, selfishness does not. Self-esteem is also distinct from self-image, which refers to your beliefs about yourself and is considered a result of self-esteem (Seaward, 2024). Everyone deserves to recognize their worth and lead a happy life. Healthy self-esteem is associated with psychological well-being and serves as the best defense against stress (Seaward, 2024).
Nathaniel Branden, author of The Six Pillars of Self Esteem, asserts self-esteem is essential for psychological well-being and can be developed through six, interconnected key practices or "pillars" . By actively implementing these practices you can improve self-esteem, cope with challenges, and foster positive relationships (Seaward, B., 2024 p192-193):
1. Living consciously: being present in the moment rather than focusing on past or future.
2. Self-acceptance: embracing all aspects of ourselves without judgment
3. Self-responsibility: electing to take responsibility for your own happiness.
4. Self-assertiveness: encouraging self-expression and voicing one’s own values, wants, and needs.
5. Living purposely: setting goals and actively engaged in achieving them
6. Personal integrity: aligning one’s values with actions.
Self-esteem is a life skill that can be taught and cultivated. It is a slow and gradual process that is so important it should be tended to daily (Seward, 2024). There are several methods to enhance your self-esteem. To start, it's crucial to understand who you are. Reflect upon your values and beliefs. From there, you can set attainable goals and work towards them. In August 2023, The Yale Ledger published seven proven tips to bolster your self-esteem and confidence:
Prioritize self-care: practice good sleep hygiene, prioritize nutrition, and engage in exercise.
Surround yourself with supportive people: immerse yourself with supportive individuals.
Develop a growth mindset: embrace challenges as learning opportunities.
Embrace self-improvement: make a deliberate effort to nurture abilities and qualities.
Practice daily affirmations: engage in positive self-talk. YOU’RE WORTH IT!
Set achievable goals: Establish attainable objectives and work towards them.
Practice self-compassion: Transform self-doubt into self-support.
