Over the past couple of weeks, we have continued learning about Mexico and how it is similar to and different from the United States. We have learned that Spanish is the main language and have been listening to songs to help us remember some Spanish words. The children know the colors and numbers as well as names of family members.

The children are also working in small groups to create a project in which they will teach the class about one area they are experts in. For example, one group will present on the people in Mexico, one group will present about the animals and one group will talk about the land. I can't wait to see the finished products in the next couple of weeks!

After passing around a dollar bill, the children shared what they noticed about it. Many said it is green, it has a 1 on it, and there is a face on the front. It was exciting that many students already knew who the face belonged to on the front of the dollar bill.

After exploring the dollar bill, we read and watched a video about George Washington and also discussed Abraham Lincoln. We will celebrate both of their birthdays this upcoming Monday, February 18th - Presidents' Day.

Math: We are currently finishing our work on Chapter 6 - Understanding Place Value (tens and ones). We have worked on representing numbers through 120 using 10s and 1s.

Fundations (our phonics program): We are finishing out work in unit 7 which focuses on learning some new glued sounds. The glued sounds we have learned in this unit are "ang", "ing", "ung", "ong", "ank", "ink", "unk" and "onk". These sounds make words like "ring", "honk", and "song".
