November 30th, 2018

Happy Friday Everyone! Here are a few important reminders:

  • As of Monday, December 3rd, we will be having P.E. twice a week instead of art twice a week. Please make sure to send sneakers in to school on Monday and Thursday every week.
  • With the start of snowy weather, it is a good idea to send your child in to school wearing boots if there is any snow or mud on the ground. Please remember to send your child in with shoes to change into if they are wearing boots. This helps to keep our floors clean and safe. You are welcome to send in an extra pair of sneakers to leave at school if you wish.
  • Please remember to check and empty your child's orange take home folder daily! The folder generally contains your child's school work and sometimes important information regarding events, meetings and activities. Please send it back to school every day.

Highlights from Room 3

Social Studies Unit: Some Ways the Same, Some Ways Different

Our focus this week has been learning about Helen Keller. Through books, videos and discussions, we learned that Helen Keller faced many challenges in her life. However, with courage, she was able to overcome many challenges. While learning about hearing and visual impairments, the students had the opportunity to write their names in Braille, sign their names using American Sign Language and listen to a simulation of what it may sound like for a student with a hearing impairment.

We did a lot of writing in November!

Please check your child's folder for their "November Journal". This packet contains some writing pieces that your child worked on this past month. Our focus in writing has been adding detail to our writing. We have discussed the importance of providing the reader with a lot of information about the writing topic.

Math and Phonics Updates

Math: We have learned the following addition strategies:

  • Add in any order (3+4 is the same as 4+3)
  • Counting on
  • Add 3 numbers
  • Make a 10 to add (when solving 9+6 it may be easier to think of it as 10+5)
  • Double Facts

Please check your child's folder next week for their corrected Chapter 3 Assessment

Fundations (our phonics program): We are currently working in Unit 4 which is learning about the Bonus Letter Rule. For more information on our Fundations program, please visit our classroom website and find the "Literacy Links" tab under "Important Links".
