Welcome to Art 2

Hi there... My name is Ms. Nielsen

I will be teaching you 8th Grade Art 2. I have worked at RJG for two decades and have always loved making things since I was a little kid. That's MANY collective years of creating and teaching others how to be artists. Needless to say I LOVE ART!!

How Things Work in Art 2

Have you ever heard of Teaching For Artist Behavior? Probably not!

Teaching For Artistic Behavior or TAB is where the student is totally in charge of all the art that they create. That's right... You will get to choose what you will make and what materials you will create it with. TAB focuses on ALL aspects of being an artist instead of just the final artwork.

The process of planning your own art projects include:

  • Research and plan your artwork

  • Create drafts and revisions

  • Themed artworks for multiple studio classes

  • Get feedback on your in process work

  • Complete, reflect and display your finished themed artwork

Occasionally I ask students to work with a specific material or idea so that we can all learn from the same experience. That said, most of the time you will be in charge of what you create, what materials you use and other choices associated with making your own artistic choices.

Traditional art classes (and there is still value in these ideas, we're simply doing things differently) focus on everyone doing a similar work of art using one medium at a time. While still valuable and creative, this style of making art has less choice and being a true artist is all about choice!

What the heck is a Themed Artwork?

I mentioned it above a couple times without explaining, but a Themed Artwork is an artwork of your choice that has a theme. I ask you to create around a theme THREE times during the semester. Directions and a deeper explanation are available HERE.

Next Steps:

Soooooo on your own you need to:

  • Come up with an idea/theme for an artwork. It should be something that is interesting to you that you will want to work on for at least 3 studio classes.

  • Figure out what kind of materials you will use. We have a ton and can see the full list here

  • Talk to me (Ms. Nielsen) about your plan. As your studio manager I will make sure that your plan meets W.O.W requirements and ask you some questions to put you on the right path.

  • Get to it!! Start making your artwork, explore, experiment, make adjustments and changes to your plan as necessary.

  • Make sure to document what you have done at the end of each studio class. Take a digital photo using your smart phone or your Chromebook. It's expected that your work will be in progress so don't worry that you are taking a pic when you're not finished. You will use these images in your Digital Portfolio which is something that EVERYONE will pass in towards the end of the semester.
