Children need a cheerful and stimulating setting in which to further their social development, learn about self-sufficiency, and develop moral values. Our program is structured to enhance and extend the nurturing begun by parents during the formative years of early childhood. It is designed to prepare children for a smooth transition into the world of elementary school by offering a curriculum of emerging literacy skills and kindergarten preparation. Student graduates leave this program with the skills and confidence for the challenge of kindergarten. Parents move into elementary schools with an understanding of educational needs and a commitment to active participation in their child’s classroom.
What is a Parent Cooperative? ABC Preschool is a nonprofit parent cooperative preschool, which means that the school is owned, operated, and maintained by the parents of currently enrolled children.
The cooperative nature of the school requires and encourages committed parental involvement in the classroom and general functioning of the school. Our teacher is the only paid employee. Parent volunteers spend time as parent aides in the classroom, commit to family jobs each school year, and serve on the executive board. The Executive Board is made up of returning families elected to fill nine Executive Board positions as their family jobs. Terms begin June 1st after some job shadowing and generally last until the family graduates out of ABC.
